Farmers Market back in action

Last week the cloudy morning gave way to a beautiful day, and the opening bell rang out to 26 vendors with a wide variety of plants, vegetable,s and homemade goods. 7:30 a.m. - noon  in the park & ride at Lee Newton Park.

As my alarm went off at 4:50 a.m. Saturday morning, there’s a little part of me that groans. Why do I do this? I pull out of my drive with my little trailer in tow, and pull into the park & ride lot a little early this time, 5:50. I was excited. 

Normally we would have had seven weeks of the Jasper Farmers Market behind us, but this was just our second market of 2020. Plus, I get to hang out with some of the best, talented, hardest working people I know. And I’ve definitely missed them!

My task starts with signs and cones. And a new job this year, setting up hand washing stations. Also new this year, to allow extra spacing between vendors, I have closed off the entire lot for vendors only. I apologize for any inconvenience, but sometimes you just gotta do what you have to do. And I’m thankful to say I have not heard any complaints.

The cloudy morning gave way to another beautiful day, and the opening bell rang out to 26 vendors and some anxiously waiting customers. Those early birds were there to ensure they got the fresh, locally grown goods they were seeking. 

Sunny Side Farms had the first of some lovely heads of broccoli, Sergeant Peppers had bok choy and an array of cut herbs, Zach had three tables overloaded with kale, lettuce, carrots, onions, radishes and more. Big Ridge Farms had romaine lettuce, spinach and kale. Sunny Side & Big Ridge Farms are also our Ga. Dept. of Ag licensed meat vendors. 

They raise their own animals and can answer any questions you may have about the process. And I can attest, it’s the best meat you can get. Folks, ground beef is suppose to be red, not pink!

As on most Saturday mornings, my breakfast is all around me. Today it was a warm fried apple pie from Irene. 

Then a tomato,olive and basil pizzetti from Tony. And after closing everything up, I slipped one of the peanut butter bars made by Jackie out of the container. I promise the rest made it home to my better half, well almost anyway!

Overall, it’s just been nice to be back to normal and spend the morning with what has become my extended family over the years. And that’s why I got up so early this morning.

There was so much more - breads, jellies, jams, eggs, carpenter bee traps, wind chimes, wood signs & decor, jewelry, soaps and all kinds of plants. You just need to come see for yourself! 7:30-12 in the park & ride lot.

Oh, and dessert after supper tonight was strawberry cream sorbet for me and Georgia peach for Ron. It’s so good to be back, thanks to all those people that helped make it possible.
