The spring baseball/softball and t-ball season got off to a great start Saturday as beautiful sunny weather, a rarity this year, shone down and teams were able to get all their games in following the ceremony. “We were very happy with the day,” said Parks Director Brian Jones. “The weather was great. It’s been unusual in the fact that we had continuous rain during the first part of March. The week leading up to opening day we had seven straight days of sunshine. That was a God-send. Everybody got to practice that week.”

Jones said approximately 528 kids in age from as young as three to as old as 12 are playing on around 46 teams this spring. Games are held at Roper Park on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with Wednesdays reserved for practice. Jones said while enrollment for the county’s recreation league is down a little, the program remains steady in its numbers.

One thing the program needs, he said, is more head coaches. “Everybody wants to be an assistant and nobody wants to be the man – or the woman,” he said. “It’s very fulfilling but you have people who are working 40-50 hours a week and then trying to come and coach and it’s a lot on them. We need some shot callers.” Anyone who would like to become a head coach, call Jones at 706-253-8863.
