Pickens High Theater to present Antigone Now

By Tom DiPuma

For PHS Theatre

The cast, crew, and directors of the defending Region 6AAAA One-Act Play Champions, Pickens High School Theatre, invite you to the community presentation of Antigone Now, this year’s competition piece. The community show will be Thursday (Oct. 26), at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $8 and students are $5. Light concessions, and show shirts will be available for purchase while supplies last. This year’s Region 6AAAA One-Act competition is being hosted by PHS on Saturday 10/28/17.

Antigone Now, inspired by Sophocles’’ Antigone, is a modern tragedy written by Melissa Cooper. The work was written for and premiered by the Dallas Theatre Center in Dallas Texas in 2003, with National Endowment of the Arts Grant Funding. Ms. Cooper holds a MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and currently teaches acting at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City.

In the midst of a bombed-out city still feeling the aftershocks of war, the rebellious and intense Antigone defies her uncle, Creon, to bury her disgraced brother, Polyneices. This contemporary response to the myth of Antigone brings powerful, modern prose to an ancient and universal story.

The cast and crew for Pickens High School’s rendition of the show are:

Directors: Kelley Wilson and Valerie Boehm; Cast: Antigone, Macy Gallagher; Creon, Nick DiPuma; Ismene, Lila McArthur; Chorus, Katie Burdett (lead), Ansley Coyle, Hannah Hardison, Andy Harper, Sean Little, Austin Lummus, Katie Mulkey, Olivia Prather; Crew: Stage managers Zoe Bryant and Mallory Daniel; Stage crew, Bodhi Griffiths, Luke Collis; Lights, Alexis Brooks; Sound, Ana Corielle; Design/publicity, Emma DiPuma.

Intense thematic elements (war, death, suicide, and self-sacrifice) are involved in this show. If questions of patron age are a concern, parental discretion is advised.

The public is welcome all day at the region competition, however the show times are fluid and audience noise/ distraction can be held against the performing school. The approximate schedule is School 1 at 9, School 2 at 10:15, School 3 (PHS) at 11:30, School 4 at 1:15, School 5 at 2:45, results usually 30-40 minutes after the last performance. There is no cost for the Saturday event.
