Feb. 23, 2011 --- Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and Georgia Forestry responded to a large brush fire that occurred yesterday on Old Nelson Road in northern Cherokee County.
A caller contacted Cherokee County E-911 to report that approximately ¼ acre was on fire and it was getting close to the trees. Cherokee County firefighters responded to the scene and requested assistance from Georgia Forestry to help contain the fire. Georgia Forestry made breaks around the fire to keep it from spreading.
Portions of Old Nelson Road were closed for a couple of hours until the area was safe for travel. According to a representative from Georgia Forestry, approximately 30-40 acres of forest land was destroyed by the fire. Georgia Power was also contacted due to several power poles receiving major damage due to the fire.
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services stayed on stayed on scene until about 10 o’clock last night checking for hot spots. Firefighters did return to the area several times after homeowners contacted 911 about seeing additional flames and smoke. According to one of the firefighters on scene, residents may see smoke in that area for the next couple of days.
