Water crews from the city of Jasper repair a broken line at the Sellars Street and South Main intersection December 30.
Mayor John Weaver said it was a typical cold weather break in one of the older lines. According to Weaver cold weather, cold water and suddenly changing temperatures will cause to simply snap. He said these breaks are often as clean as if someone had cut through them with a knife. As is often the case with cold weather breaks, the pressure in the lines forced them to stay together even after they are completely split apart, so little water was lost Thursday.
Weaver commended his crews for their skill and toughness in working with the water lines when temperatures are below freezing. “One of the toughest jobs you can find,” he said. “It’s not as bad when you are good at repairing lines. We have a pretty good crew.”
