Mr. Ralph Godfrey, age 84 of Marietta, passed away Friday, Oct. 9, 2009.
Born in Pickens County, Mr. Godfrey has been a resident of Cobb County since 1952. He worked as a welder for Westinghouse and was a millwright for Ford Motor Company before retiring. Mr. Godfrey was a Mason and a member of the Blaine Lodge #534 in Pickens County where he received his 50-year pin and apron. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He loved hunting and was a longtime member of the North Georgia Beagle Club. Mr. Godfrey was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church where he was a deacon at the church.
Mr. Godfrey is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lowree Godfrey, Marietta; daughter, Sharon Godfrey, Marietta; brother, Charles ?Dick? Godfrey, Apollo Beach, Fl.; and sisters, Mildred Garner, Betty Godfrey and Ruby Daugherty, all of Talking Rock, Ga.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. at Harmony Grove Baptist Church in Marietta with the Revs. Jarrell Dickerson and Robert Allen officiating. Burial was in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites. Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta in charge of arrangements.
Miss Veneda V. Dean, age 89 of Cartersville, Ga., died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at Emory Cartersville Medical Center in Cartersville following a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 10, 1920 in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late L.E. and Alice Bennett Dean. Miss Dean had worked as a supervisor with Cartersville Undergarment Company and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors included several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Allen officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Joseph, Andy and John Mathews, Justin DeLong, David Young and Randall Morgan.
Rex Dwight Kirby, age 46 of Marietta, passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at his residence.
Survivors include his sisters, Rhonda Wynn, Marietta, and Martha Crumbley, Tennessee; and brother, John Michael Kirby, Vanceboro, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Homer Morris officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Mark Lillard, age 41 of Marble Hill, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2009 at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome.
Survivors include his father, Herbert Lillard, Marble Hill; and sisters, Tracy Allen, Canton, and Tami Goode, Jasper.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 from Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Wallace Parks officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Nathan Thacker, Joseph Johnson, Shane Abercrombie, Marc Allen and Robert Cronan. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. J.W. Rogers, age 72 of Canton, Ga., passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at Embracing Hospice.
Mr. Rogers? hobbies included working on old cars and traveling. He was also a member of New Hightower Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lois Rogers, Canton; children, Debra Lynn Ebersberger, Ellijay, and Jerry Rogers, Jasper; sisters, Joyce Harris, Betty Harris and Hannah West, all of Canton, and Clora Mae Bennefield, Powder Springs; and brothers, Marion Reece, Charlotte, N.C., and J.D. Reece, Powder Springs. Three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gene Childers officiating. Interment followed in New Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Eugene Silbers of Resaca, Ga., passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 at Gordon Hospital following a heart attack.
Mr. Silvers was born July 6, 1944 in Murray County, the son of the late Arthur and Lula Priest Silvers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dora Fountain Silvers; a son and daughter; four brothers; one sister; and four half-sisters and two half-brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean Thomas Silvers, to whom he was married for 20 years; children, April Bright and Joy Posey, both of Resaca; sisters, Gertrude Radcliff, Resaca, Della Silvers, Ranger, and Vera Padgett, Oakman, Ga.; and grandchildren, Chase and Allison Bright and Megan Gamble. Nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday at 8 p.m. from the Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Quarles officiating. Interment followed Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery near Jasper.
Mrs. Mattie Laura Davis, age 67 of Tate, Ga., passed Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at Wellstar-Kennestone Hospital in Marietta following a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 4, 1942 in Sandersville, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Jule and Ruby Lee Dawson Hampton. Mrs. Davis was also preceded in death by brothers, Herman and Lonnie Hampton. She had worked as a nurses aid at Mountainside Health Care and was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Tate.
Survivors include daughters, Norma Davis, Atlanta, and Tara Davis, Jasper; sons and daughter-in-law, Carl Davis, Jr., Tate, and Harper and Stephanie Davis, Green Bay, Wi.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, sister, Annie Hampton, Tate; brother and sister-in-law, Julian and Lula Hampton, Detroit, Mi; and aunt, Kizzie Wright, Detroit, Mi. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

Mr. Edwin H. Fowler, age 67 of, Ellijay died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009.
Mr. Fowler was born on August 28, 1942 in Gilmer Co. He is the son of the late Clarence and Nettie Jane Kimmons Fowler. He worked for the power company and was a member of the Long Swamp Baptist Church. He also served in the US Army.
Survivors include his daughter, Carrie Fowler, Jasper; son, Sammy Fowler, Ellijay; brothers, Ruel, Charles, L.C. and Roy Fowler, all of Ellijay, and sister, Lethal Weaver, Ellijay Two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009 at 2 p.m. from Macedonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Hollifield and Russell Burt officiating. Music was by the Macedonia Church Choir. Pallbearers were: Estes Mooney, Ricky, Michael and Clay Fowler, Hubert McClure, Robert and Larry Weaver. Honorary pallbearer was Alan McCollum. Interment was in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with graveside rites by the North Ga. Honor Guard.
Mrs. Gail Bridges Bryant, age 59 of Cartersville, Ga. and formerly of Jasper, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at Emory- Cartersville Medical Center in Cartersville following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Bryant was born Jan. 19, 1950 in Pickens County to Ben and Catherine Moody Bridges.
Survivors include her husband, Tommy Bryant, Marietta; parents, Ben and Catherine Bridges, Jasper; daughters, Valerie Tiggs and Kathleen Russell, both of Cartersville; son, Cedrick Bridges, Jasper; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Stanley, Nelson, Jane Hooks and Alisia Bridges, both of Kennesaw; and brothers, Randy Bridges, Kennesaw; Melvin Bridges, Canton, and Alan Bridges, Tate. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Lake Forest Memorial Park. Viewing will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. A wake service will be held at Roper Funeral Home from 7-8 Thursday evening.
Mrs. Monica H. Armstrong, age 88 of Blairsville, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at the residence of her granddaughter in Jasper, Ga. following a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 7, 1920 in Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Joshua James and Cora Gates Hinton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Edward Armstrong. Mrs. Armstrong had last worked as a nurse and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnne and Robert Hutchenson and Michele and Donald Rice, all of Blairsville, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, James Edward and Elaine Armstrong, Milford, N.J., and Bernard Robert and Vickie Armstrong, Jasper, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Hinch, Peoria, Il., and Susie Osterbur, Rapid City, S.D.; and brothers, James Hinton, Blairsville, Kenneth Hinton, Mansfield, Il., and Robert Hinton, Tuscolla, Il. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 from Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Friends were received at the church from noon until the funeral home on Wednesday. Flowers were accepted or donations may be made to Embracing Hospice of Atlanta.
