Engineer Phil Eberly, an aviation program manager, measures the crack from a lightning strike that damaged the edge of the runway at the Pickens County airport Wednesday night. The lightning damage, covered a 12-feet-long area, and was near the edge of the runway so planes were still able to land and takeoff on Thursday.
An airport employee said they picked up chunks of asphalt hundreds of feet away.
Nearby electrical outlets were also blown out.
