Local response to Nelson lawsuit over gun ownership

By Ralph Dennis,
Nelson Correspondent
A lawsuit was filed in the District Federal Court in Gainesville, Ga. on May 16 by the Washington D.C.-based Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence over the city of Nelson’s ordinance requiring all households maintain a firearm.
The lawsuit filed against the city and the council members on behalf of several of the Brady Center members seeks a ruling that this ordinance is unconstitutional and seeks a permanent injunction against its enforcement.

See this week's print or online editions for local response from councilmembers and one resident who was contacted by the Brady Center.

I would have thought that this group of feeble-minded people could have simply looked at the City of Kennesaw. They have had the same rule for over thirty years, and it has withstood legal challenges during that time.

Seems odd that cities can BAN possession of guns, but cannot REQUIRE them. Must be in the water Liberals drik.

Very few people in Kennesaw actually own a gun, despite the requirement to do so, Jim. The government cannot even enforce a law designed to allow people to enforce the state's laws LOL!

Where does that factoid come from? Do you have any proof that ownership of firearms in Kennesaw is "very few"? Or is this just another liberal shot in the dark?

The point remains that, if it's legal to ban guns, or even a certain type of gun, in a town or city, why is it then illegal to demand that every home be protected by a firearm? What you answered is not what was asked.

I also remember that Kennesaw has an exception clause in place in the law. There is a mechanism by which to be excused from the responsibility. Wouldn't it be nice if the gun banners also included such a mechanism?

why do gun nuts always assume that anyone who reports the facts is a "liberal"? afraid of a little truth are you? I'm as conservative as it gets. kennesaw police have never made any effort to enforce the law, which exempts large swaths of residents including those who simply do not want to own a gun. read the law. LOL
the issue of illegality of requiring residents to own guns has never been brought up because these kinds of laws are NEVER enforced. if Nelson becomes the first to try to enforce it, you can bet your fat rear-end that the courts will squash it...
your comparison to gun restriction laws is way off base, too. the kennesaw law does not allow anyone to own weapons that are banned by the state or feds.

why does no other civilized democracy on earth guarantee its citizens the right to own guns? because in the US, the slave-owning states threatened to veto the whole Bill of Rights if it wasn't in there, because they needed a way to keep their slaves in line if they tried to revolt. that's right - the Second Amendment became a part of this country's constitution in order to preserve slavery...
