Von Jarriett Hinton, age 84 of Jasper, Ga., was born on Sept. 20, 1928, in Laurel, Ms. He went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, May 13, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Whitfield Hinton; and his parents, Evans Hall Hinton and Anna Belle Freeman Hinton.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna Hinton, Robin and Keith Brooks and Nancy and Mark Board; his son and daughter-in-law also survive, Mark and Debbie Hinton. He has three grandchildren, Joe Zima, Amanda Board and Ray Brooks. He has one surviving sister and brother-in-law, Mabel and Kenneth Rich of Richton, Ms.; and a surviving brother and sister-in-law, Elliott (Buddy) and Anice Hinton, Texas. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Von was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jasper. Von graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton, Ms., in 1954. During his education at Mississippi College he was called to serve in the Army from 1951-53. After graduating from Mississippi College, he continued his education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he met and married his wife, Ruth, who was also attending Seminary. After graduating, he was called to pastor two churches: Camak Baptist Church in Camak, Ga., and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Macon, Ga.
In 1967 Von joined the Navy and attended Chaplaincy School. He was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii for two years and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1969 he joined the Naval Reserve and moved to Jasper, Ga. He then became the director of the Family and Children Services and served that office for 16 years.
Until his death, Von was a Sunday School teacher and an Associate Pastor of Visitation at the First Baptist Church. He also taught a Wednesday night Bible Study at Rock Creek Manor. In addition, he was the Chaplain to the sheriff’s department where he led a Bible Study every Monday morning. He was a Chaplain and volunteer for the Piedmont Mountainside Hospital Auxiliary. He was the Charter President of the Optimist Club. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Marine Corps Mountain League and Master Gardeners.
He was a member of the Pickens County Ministerial Association and was a longtime volunteer at Good Samaritan Health and Wellness.
Von loved his Lord, his family, his country, his friends and his garden. He was always willing to help those in need and to witness to those who needed to know the Savior.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday May 15, at the Jasper First Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Lewis and Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. The interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with local chapter #47 DAV in charge of military graveside honors. In lieu of flowers donations may be to the First Baptist Church of Jasper or Jasper Optimist Club. Arrangements were entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home.
Mrs. Regina Kyle Snellbaker, age 54 of Jasper, Ga., died Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at her residence.
Born on March 6, 1959, Mrs. Snellbaker worked as office manager for Vards.
Survivors include her husband, John Snellbaker, Jasper; parents, Robert and Sylvia Kyle, Decatur; and brother, Chip Kyle, Decatur. Several aunts, uncles and other relatives also survive.
At her request she was cremated and a memorial service will be planned at a later date. The caring staff of Roper Funeral Home & Crematory in Jasper in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Jessica Colley Sams, age 33 of Dawsonville, Ga., died Friday, May 10, 2013, at Northside Hospital Forsyth in Cumming, Ga.
Survivors include her husband, Timothy Sams, Dawsonville; daughters, Taya and Shalyn Sams, Dawsonville; father, Harold Colley, Jasper; mother and step-father, Dianne and Jeff Shahan, Jasper; brother, Jason Colley, Jasper; sisters and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Dwayne, Reddin, Jasper, and Jeannett Denton, Marietta; and grandparents, Ralph and Stella Chattin, Ellijay. Several aunts uncles and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at the Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Steve Chapman and Jimmy Sams officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home & Crematory of Jasper
Mr. John Steven Wilkie, age 59 of Rome, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at a local hospital.
Mr. Wilkie was born in Rome, Ga., on March 17, 1954, son of the late John Keith Wilkie and the late Beatrice Crump Hendrix. He was also preceded in death by his step-father who raised him, Bud Hendrix.
He was a graduate of Pepperell High School and was of the Christian faith. Mr. Wilkie was a professional picture framer by trade and was co-owner of Artistic Frames in Jasper, Ga., for several years. He was an avid golfer and was a steward in friendship.
Survivors include his faithful partner of 25 years, Laura L. Burns, Rome; sisters, Mrs. Leigh Langley, and her husband Brad, Rome, and Ms. Aime Wilkie, Atlanta; brother, Joe Wilkie, and his wife Sharon, Cedartown; step-son, Alex Pruitt, Gainesville; granddaughter, Collins Pruitt, Gainesville; nephew, Patrick Langley; and niece, Keri Wilkie. Several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 11, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel. Friends of Mr. Wilkie delivered eulogies. An additional memorial service will be held in Big Canoe at a later date. In loving memory of Mrs. Ruth Evelyn Glance, age 92, who died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Grandview Health Care Center in Jasper, Ga., following a period of declining health.
Born July 12, 1920 in Kalkaska, Mi., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Eva Jane Anthony Benware. Mrs. Glance had worked 27 years as an elementary school teacher in the Mio AuSable School District and then retired to Florida with her late husband, Peter.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Susan K. and Richard Hammill, Jasper; sons and daughter-in-law, Peter B. Glance, Bangkok, Thailand, and Terry L. and Karen Glance, Davenport Center, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jeffrey A. Hammill (spouse Jennifer), Marietta, Ga., and Jennifer K. Johnson (spouse Nicholas), Canton, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Katie, Abby and Andrew Hammill and Harper, Bryce and Sydney Johnson.
At her request, Mrs. Glance was cremated. A private family Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16. Dr. James McCormick will officiate. Mr. Harold Perlie Hendrix, age 93 of Marble Hill, entered into rest on Sunday April 28, 2013, at his residence.
Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Paul Hendrix and Maurice Toddy and Joan Hendrix, all of Marble Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Larry Holden and Betty and Donnie Fowler, all of Marble Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Eloise Hendrix, Jasper; and sisters, Ruby Brooks, Ball Ground, and Willie Grace Brooks, Marble Hill. Mr. Hendrix had six grandchildren, Stacy, Kelley, Angie, Joyce, Amanda and Jonathan; step-granddaughter, Donna; eight great-grandchildren; step-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, from the Cagle Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Huey Holloway and Joey Watson officiating. Interment followed at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Tim Holloway, Ronnie Harrington, Wayne Anderson, Jerry and Randall Brooks, Tony Fountain and Jimmy Weaver. Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Patterson, Ball Ground; sons and daughters-in-law, Little Buddy, Jr. and Hailey Patterson, Ball Ground, Sammy and Tammy Patterson, Canton, Ga., and Jonathan Patterson, Ball Ground; daughters and son-in-law, Lewanda and Ricky Edwards, Gainesville, Ga., and Mary Beth Holbrook, Ball Ground; brothers, Billy, James and George Patterson, all of Austell, Ga., and Roy Patterson, Holly Springs, Ga.; sisters, June Ann Grizzle, Jasper, Ga., Julie Smith, North Carolina, and Tina Taylor, Jasper, Ga. Mr. Patterson had 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Mr. Patterson was preceded in death by his parents, Bright and Georgetta Patterson; daughter, Miranda June Patterson; sisters, Mary Jo Garrett and Melba Garrett; and brothers, Harold, Hardy and Junior Patterson.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Franklin King and Tom McTaggart officiating.
