For the Market
Fourteen years ago a seed was planted in this community by Kathy Bell. That seed, now the Jasper Farmers’ Market, has grown because of your support. With “soil” provided by the hard work of Kathy and the first class of Pickens Co. Master Gardeners, “water” provided by a variety of vendors and “sun” provided by you the customer, this seed has blossomed into an established Saturday morning event. “Thank you” is all I can say. It doesn’t seem like much, but it’s definitely heartfelt.
I’m glad to report that this year the “Ask a Master Gardener” table is back. So bring all your gardening questions with you to the Market and put them to the test. If they don’t have an answer for you that day, they will find one and get back to you. This will be especially helpful this year since we no longer have a county agent. We will also have a variety of useful literature and handouts available.
On April 20 at 10:30 there will be a Children’s program at the Master Gardener table in celebration of Earth Day. Pickens County 4-H’ers will be helping out with this event. We have many new educational programs coming this year, so be sure to check out future articles for the details.
New vendors are always welcome. And as always, only homegrown or handmade is allowed. The parking fee is still only $2. We’re looking forward to an exciting new year. We had the largest turnout so far at our annual meeting in February. At this meeting we set the dates and times of the Jasper Farmers’ Market. They are as follows:
Saturday, April 6 – Opening Day from 7:30-12 and will run every Saturday through Oct. 26 with the exception of July 6 and Oct. 5 due to July 4 and Marble Festival activities, location to be announced at a later date.
Location: Park & Ride lot next to Lee Newton Park off Hwy. 53
Wednesday, June 19 – Wednesday Market opens and will run through August 28. Same hours and location.
Please come out and support our vendors. This Market was started because we wanted to better this community and make available fresh, locally grown produce and handmade crafts. Without you, this Market cannot exist. The Jasper Farmers’ Market is a project of the Pickens County Master Gardeners.
