Mollie Shaw named PHS 2013 STAR Student

    Mollie Shaw, a high school senior, has been named the 2013 STAR Student of Pickens High School. The announcement is made by the Optimist Club of Jasper, local sponsor for the Pickens STAR program. Shaw, daughter of Tom and Maggie Shaw, selected Mrs. Debbie Grimes as her STAR Teacher.
    The PAGE Student/Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 55th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of

Education.  Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 23,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having the most influence on their academic success.  To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.
    Miss Shaw plans to attend the University of North Georgia after graduation and will major in nursing. She also plans to compete on the Cross Country Team. Miss Shaw states that she selected Mrs. Grimes as her STAR Teacher because Mrs. Grimes helped her realize that healthcare was the right career path for her. Mrs. Grimes has taught for 31 years and she currently teaches Healthcare Science and Technology at Pickens High School.
    The Optimist Club of Jasper will host the annual STAR Banquet on Thursday, Feb. 28. The banquet will be held at 7 p.m. at Chattahoochee Technical College, 100 Campus Drive, Jasper.  Anyone interested in attending the banquet should contact Reservation Coordinator Rodney Buckingham by e-mailing him at [email protected]. com. Banquet tickets are $22 per person.
    This year, the Optimists will recognize the PHS STAR Student and Teacher along with nine STAR finalists. This is the 23rd year the Optimist Club has sponsored the largest and most unique local STAR Banquet in this statewide program. In the local program, the Optimists not only recognize the STAR Student and Teacher, but an additional nine STAR Student and Teacher finalists.
