Across from the Jasper Drug Store, on the corner of Main Street, sits a monument dedicated to arguably the most memorable team to ever play sports in Pickens County. The 1973-74 State Championship Girls Basketball Team has always evoked pride from local residents and the bar that they set has not been achieved since. Head Basketball Coach Roy Cowart was in his 5th season at the helm of the Dragonettes and he knew that the girls that made up his squad had a lot of potential. “I originally thought that the ’72-73 team had the best chance at succeeding at the state tournament, and when I saw this team I knew we would and could win the region at the very least. They had a lot of chemistry!”
