This will be the third year that Burnt Mountain Trading Company is sponsoring the Gingerbread Contest and we hope for it to continue for many years to come. Last year when my parents came to town for a visit, we went to Asheville and saw the National Gingerbread Contest held at the Grove Park Inn. Wow, they had hundreds of submissions from around the country! Pictures that we took there will be on our website at burntmountaintrading.com and go to the “gingerbread contest” page.
Please check it out for some creative ideas. It would be awesome to get Jasper, Pickens and some of our surround county neighbors to get on board for this sweet adventure and make this a tradition that get people coming to Jasper and seeing what an awesome town we truly have!
This year’s Gingerbread Contest will be amazing, beautiful and fun! There will be three categories of participation: Youth, Business and Family. What a great way to show your creativity and holiday spirit! -perfect Thanksgiving Day or weekend project. Sponsored by Burnt Mountain Trading Company, the entry fee is $5. Enter by Monday, Nov. 26. Your creation is due by Thursday, Nov. 29. Your sweet design doesn’t just have to be made from gingerbread, as that can be difficult to bake. We have been watching “Halloween Wars” on one of the cooking shows and found they use all kinds of things to make their sweet creations, which is why we have opened up the category to more than just gingerbread. You may use gingerbread, cake, Rice Crispy Treats, crackers, cookies, candies or any baking items. We noticed the Wars show used Rice Crispy Treats as the base for much of their structural elements. Keep in mind the items will be unrefrigerated for 2 weeks. Go to burntmountaintrading.com to see ideas and to get links to recipes.
The top 5 will be announced in the Dec. 13 Pickens County Progress and Knowpickens. com. Prize money will be awarded for the top finalist of each category. Anybody can be part of this fun project to build on our community holiday spirit in the downtown district as all creations will be on display in the downtown district. A map will be created to show where all the entries will be on display so you can walk from location to location, enjoying our quaint town, awesome businesses and sweet creations!
Saturday, Dec. 15, will be the close of the show and all creations will need to be picked up then. So whether you make a wreath with gingerbread men, sculpt a pet or build an entire village, we hope you participate. There are some wonderful kits out there that are inexpensive which you can put your own personal spin on or build off of, too! We hope you will join us! Please mail or drop your application to Burnt Mountain Trading at 14 Mark Whitfield St., Jasper, Ga. 30143.
