Tour the historic Tate Cemetery Saturday

Submitted by Janice Sly

The National Society of the Daughters of the America Revolution is dedicated to keeping America strong by promoting patriotism and preserving history. The daughters of the local Sequoyah Chapter, DAR, here in Pickens County look forward to conducting a tour of the old Tate Community Cemetery and the private Tate-Griffeth Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. The tour will begin in the old community cemetery near the Tate Depot at the grave of Barnabas Arthur, pioneer and veteran of the War of 1812. This tour is being conducted in conjunction with, and in celebration of Tate Days at the invitation of the Marble Valley Friends.

Members of the new Genealogical Records Committee of Sequoyah Chapter will give highlights and history about some of the 200 citizens interred in the two cemeteries. Dressed in period costume two members will portray the wives of the earliest Allred and Griffeth families.

This tour is offered free to the public. In lieu of bad weather, the program will be presented in the auditorium of the Tate Elementary School at 2 p.m.   Everyone is welcome! Come enjoy a glimpse of the history of early Pickens County! Help celebrate Tate Days.
