Patty Cheney Nix, age 91, passed away Oct. 13, 2012, following a stroke.
A native of Atlanta, Patty lived in recent years at Delmar Gardens in Lawrenceville. Prior to that, she lived in Jasper (Bent Tree), Ga., Jacksonville, Fl., and Jesup, Ga.
Patty was a graduate of Girls High School in Atlanta and Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. For over 30 years she delighted in instilling the love of learning in first and second graders, first at Orange Street Elementary School in Jesup and later at Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Jesup, First Baptist Church of Jacksonville and New Lebanon Presbyterian Church of Jasper. Patty loved all the things surrounding her in God’s world - birds, butterflies and flowers especially. She enjoyed golf, fishing and was an active bridge player. Most of all, however, she loved the Lord and she loved her family.
Patty was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Joe Nix. Survivors include her sons, Walt Nix and wife Beth, Loganville; son, Paul Nix and wife Cathy, Canton; and daughter, Joanne Antcliff and husband Rich, Hampton, Va. Eight grandchildren and five great- grandchildren also survive.
A Celebration of Life service was held at New Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Jasper, on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. The family would welcome memorial gifts to: United Hospice Foundation, 1626 Jeurgens Court, Norcross, Ga. 30093, Attn: Camp Cocoon.
Roper Funeral Home & Crematory of Jasper announces the death of Mrs. Gertrude Chastain, age 91 of Jasper, who passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012.
She is survived by her friend, Kerry Fairbanks, and other family members also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home. Mrs. Chastain was cremated following the service.
Charles B. Wynne, age 82 of Venice, Fl., and Jasper, Ga., passed away Oct. 17, 2012, after a long illness.
Mr. Wynne was a banker his entire life, and was most noted as a member of the Lions Club. Preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn; sons, Timothy and Charles, Jr.; and daughter, Susan, Charles is survived by his wife, Fern; son, Terry and his wife Brenda, Germantown, Tn.; stepdaughters, Kristi and Kathy Nelson; grandchildren, John, Jr., Catherine and Angela Bledsoe; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Kano, Elizabeth and Cole Bledsoe.
Charles’ life was celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel, with cremation following. Inurnment will take place later in Jasper, Ga.
Rev. James Richards
The Rev. James Richards of Attalla, Al., age 96, passed away Oct. 17, 2012, after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Fox Richards.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Palmer and Pat Bartlett, Attalla; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Henry Richards, South Carolina; sister, Joyce Sweat, Smyrna, Ga.; brothers-in-law, Jim and Denton Fox, both of Jasper; and sisters-in-law, Francis Gravely and Shirley Beck, both of Jasper, and Rose Horton, Albertville, Al. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A viewing was held on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Collier and Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden, Al., with the Rev. Kent Lester officiating.
Mr. Jay W. Carr, age 36 of Jasper, passed away at his residence Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.
Survivors include his father, John Wesley Carr, Jr., Jasper; brother, James Carr, Buford; and sister, Julie Carr, Jasper. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Jay was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Faye Carr.
The funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at County Line Baptist Church with the Revs. Jess Posey and Ronnie Ray officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: James Carr, David, William and Randy Ray, Steven Ware and Jerry Parker. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Sylvia Cloer Hasty, age 70 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper following a sudden illness.
Born Dec. 19, 1941, in Atlanta, G.a, she was the daughter of the late Delma Hoyt and Minnie Emeline Free Cloer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Lewis Hasty; an infant son, Cary Lewis Hasty; and a brother, Lamar Cloer.
Mrs. Hasty had worked as a secretary with the Cobb County Board of Education and had worked at Wal-Mart. She was a member of the Jasper United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Wendy Cantrell, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Melinda Hasty, Acworth, Ga., and Chad and Christy Hasty, Columbus, Ga.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Santiago and Brett, Brittany, Jessica and Graham Hasty; great-grandchildren, Caulin and Kaitlyn Turner, Sara and Tristan Santiago and Baylee Hasty; and sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Earl Grant, Port Isabelle, Tx. Other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Jasper United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chip Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangement and services were entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home & Crematory, Jasper.
James Poole, Sr.
James Marvin Poole, Sr., age 67 of Waleska, Ga., passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earnest Poole; and brother, Herman Poole.
Survivors include wife, Christine Poole, Waleska; sons and daughter-in-law, James Marvin Poole, Jr., Jasper, and Shane and Jenny Poole, Waleska; daughter and son in-law, Lena and Zach Sowell, Waleska; mother, Ola Darby Poole, Waleska; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Linda Poole, Waleska; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise Poole, Canton, Charlotte and Ed Sims and Wanda and Ray McNeese, all of Waleska; grandchildren, Amber and Cody Dotson, Clinton, Mattie, Amanda and Courtnie Poole; and great-grandchild, Claire Dotson. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, from the Little Refuge Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Wright, Edwin Bishop and Bobby McFarland officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. South Canton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Jed Lankford, Jr.
Jesse “Jed” W. Lankford, Jr. of Jasper, Ga., passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the age of 94.
Jesse was born in Washington, DC, in 1918 and lived 10 years in Gainesville and a total of 28 years in Jasper with his wife Joy Lankford who passed away in 2009.
Jesse served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WW II from 1941-45 with the Anti-Sub Patrol and in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He then joined Eastern Airlines in 1945 for 33 years, retiring in 1978.
Survived include his daughters, Jan Morris, Cedartown, and Barbara Lankford, Jasper; brother, John Lankford, Taos, N.M.; and sister, Patricia Blake, Murrells Inlet, S.C. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, at Jasper United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Chip Wilson and Max Caylor officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tranquility At Kennesaw Mountain Hospice, 475 Dickson Avenue, Marietta, Ga 30064.
