Open Mic Night this Saturday

In honor of National Dance Day, Sharptop Arts Association is adding an interesting twist to this month’s Open Mic Night, to be held this Saturday, July 28.
Not only is the local arts group featuring singer/songwriter Rachel Kaplus during their monthly showcase of professional and amateur performers, but they will showcase the incredible talents of Big Canoe residents Makayla and Ansley Davis as well. Makayla and Ansley are sisters who have performed with Georgia Ballet and studied at Woodstock    School of Ballet, Georgia Ballet and Atlanta Ballet.

Ansley, 12, performed as Clara in The Georgia Ballet's 2011 The Nutcracker, as well as in Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty.  Makayla, 14, has performed in The Georgia Ballet's    Sleepy Hollow, Pinocchio, and The Nutcracker.  Makayla will be attending Mount Paran Christian School in the fall and will perform with the high school show choir, mpFX, as well as in their upcoming musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Following the Davis sisters performance, singer/songwriter Rachel Kaplus, who has been playing guitar since she was 12, will treat the crowd to a variety of originals and covers.
This performance is a kind of coming home for Kaplus, who played the coffeehouse circuit 10 years ago before falling away from music. Kaplus says she has returned to music with new passion and vigor, and will also be featured at the three-day Infusion music festival in Carrollton, Ga. later this year.
“[My] songs mostly deal with heartache, but the performance is still a good time,” Kaplus said.
The show begins at 7 p.m. at the arts center on D.B. Carroll Street in Jasper. The second half will be reserved for a traditional open mic. Performers of all ages and genres, from music to comedy to theatre and poetry, are invited to sign up for up to 10 minutes of stage time. Sign up for open mic starts at 6:30 p.m.
At this time SAA is unable to accommodate full bands that include drum kits. Acts must be able to set up and break down quickly.
Sign ups are first come first serve. To be fair to everyone, no signups will be taken before the day of the show. Please keep content PG-13.
Cost is $3 at the door.
      Light refreshments will be available.
