Soccer club kicks off season with SoccerFest

SoccerFest     Mountain City Soccer Club started one year ago this month.  It was formed by a group of parents that wanted to see soccer grow in Pickens County. What started as a meeting in the pavilion at the recreation department, has become a very competitive club. Mountain City claimed the U8 boys championship at the Cherokee cup and the U19 boys finished second in the state tournament this past spring.

In the spring, the recreation department did not offer soccer so Mountain City stepped in and gave 204 kids an opportunity to play. We had kids as young as 4 and 5 years old all the way up to 19 year olds. This coming fall, the club is going back to its original structure and offering U10 - U19 boys and girls teams. This does not mean we are down-sizing. We are growing by four teams and adding a U10 girls team from Gilmer County. We will also be adding a second U10 boys team and a second U10 girls team.

Now that the club is growing and players are starting to move up, we are attempting to add a U16 girls and a U16 boys team.  Starting these teams will also make openings on our U 14 teams.

We are now accepting registrations for the following age groups: U10 girls, U12 girls, U14 girls, U14 boys and U16- U19 boys and girls. There are not many open spots on all of these teams so it will be “first come, first serve” until the teams max is reached. Registration will be open until July 20. If there are any high school or middle school soccer players out there that want to improve their skills, then this is the place to do it. Many of our club kids make up the rosters at the schools and are the top players. It really shows that playing soccer more than once a year can make improvements in your game. It is really a sport that you have to constantly play and practice to get better.

Anyone interested can go to and download/print a registration from. There are directions on the registration form on how to turn in the forms. We are also active with our Facebook page - just search “Mountain City Soccer.”

We would also like to invite everyone to come to our second annual Soccer Fest at the pavilion at Roper park. Soccer Fest will be held on Friday, July 13, from 6-9 p.m. There will be free food, T-shirts, music, soccer games/events, door prizes and more. You can also pick up or turn in registration forms at this event. Come by and see what we are about.

Why are they no longer doing the teams for the younger kids? There were so many teams in the fall! Our little one is going to be very upset that she is not going to be able to play. Very disappointed in the organization. Putting a 6 year old on a team with 10 year old's is not an option. They are not only on different skill levels, but 10 year old's are much to big to be going head to head and in a physical game with a 6 year old.

They are not having the younger teams because the regular recreation department is going to be having teams for those age levels. Maybe in the spring, Mountain City can have the full range again. It is a great program for our county, so I hope so!
