Phyllis Sanford

Mrs. Phyllis Sanford, age 72 of Waleska, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Tranquility Hospice of Kennesaw Mountain.

Mrs. Sanford was a member of Little Refuge Baptist Church and was a People Greeter at Wal-mart.

Survivors include her children, Tim (Amanda) Westbrook, Canton, and Fred (Mindy) Medlin, Waleska; brother, Bill Lee, Jasper; and grandchildren, Taylor, Ethan and Duncan Westbrook and Bryson and Cierra Medlin.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 22, from the Sosebee Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in the Little Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jason Rumble

Jason Matthew Rumble, age 29, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in a local hospital.

Jason was a member of North Cleveland Baptist Church. He received a BS degree in Business Management from UT Chattanooga, class of 2006. He was also a graduate of Cleveland High School class of 2001.  Mr. Rumble was involved in the Big Brothers of Chattanooga organization. He loved playing guitar and enjoyed traveling.  He was an avid fan of the musical group Phish and the Atlanta Braves.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Hollis T. Rumble, Sr., and grandfather, Louie Jackson Cagle.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny Rumble, Cleveland; parents, Michael and Jackie Rumble, Old Fort; siblings, Nolan Rumble and wife, Cara Weeks Rumble, Wendell, N.C., Sarah Beth Brown and husband, Nathan, Portland, Or., and Grant Rumble, Old Fort; nephew, Lincoln Rumble; and grandparents, Anne Rumble, Jasper, Ga., and JoRene Caraway and husband, Harry, Flowery Branch, Ga.  Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

The funeral service was conducted Thursday, June 21, at 11 a.m. at North Cleveland Baptist Church with Dr. Jay McCluskey officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Jasper, Ga. The family requests that memorials be made to North Cleveland Baptist Church Building Fund, 2815 N. Ocoee Street, Cleveland, Tn. 37312. Ralph Buckner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Marjorie Bush

Marjorie Bush, age 67, died June 13, 2012, at her home in Atlanta.

Marjorie served as CEO of St. Jude’s Recovery Center for 30 years.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Elizabeth Bush Bellenger; and sister, Sue Pearson.

A memorial service for friends and family was held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, at the Church of the Holy Family in Jasper. St. Jude’s Recovery Center made an announcement of another memorial service at a future date in Atlanta for friends and colleagues. Donations to St. Jude’s in Marjorie's memory are appreciated.

Ruth Batson

Mrs. Ruth Lorene Prather Batson, age 94 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Tranquility Hospice of Kennesaw Mountain.

Born July 4, 1917, in Pickens County, Ga., she was the daughter of Edward and Amanda Alberta Ray Prather. Mrs. Batson was a dental hygienist all of her working career and was a member of the Refuge Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, daughter, Nancy Rochelle Thacker Hansard, and son, Ted Nathaniel Thacker; son-in-law, Jerry Lee Hansard; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Stanley Thacker. She was also survived by her sisters, Mrs. Lula Little, Mrs. Carolyn O’Neal, Mrs. Barbara Wood and Mrs. Ethelene Nix; and brother, Ed Prather.

Mrs. Batson was preceded in death by her Husband, Charles Royce Batson.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 24, at  Refuge Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Johnson and Carter Payne officiating. Interment followed in Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery. The family did accept flowers; however, memorial contributions may be made to the Refuge Baptist Church. Roper Funeral Home & Crematory of Jasper in charge of arrangements.


Mark Holbert

Mr. Mark Holbert, age 44 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell.

Survivors include his parents, Sylvia and Vernon Holbert, Jasper; fiancee, Shirley Fowler, Jasper; daughters, Amberly and Jessica Holbert, both of Jasper; brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Carrie Holbert, Jasper; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Jerry Hancock, Hinton Community; and grandchild, Camden Holbert, Jasper. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Rob Holbert.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Allen and Grant Wade officiating. Interment followed at Sharp Top Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Steve Roper, Brandon Duncan, Allen Wigington, Billy Wofford, Craig McFarland and Joel McFarland and Corey Greene. The family did accept flowers or donations made to a charity of your choice.


Jack Godfrey

Mr. Jack Godfrey, age 74 of Talking Rock, passed away Sunday June 17, 2012, at Heritage Hospice in Marietta.

Mr. Godfrey is survived by his wife, Faye Godfrey, Talking Rock; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kim Godfrey and Jamie and Marcia Godfrey, all of Talking Rock; daughters and sons-in-law, Glennis Ray and Sherry and Charlie Gibson, all of Talking Rock, Mary and Terry Wilson, Jasper, and Vickie and James Waters, Ellijay; brother and sister-in-law, Hoyt and Willie Godfrey, Calhoun; sister, Martha Carver, Jasper; sister-in-law, Essie Faye Godfrey, Jasper; grandchildren, Jeff Ray, Jessica Rogers, Brooke and Steven Wilson, Katie Goforth, Kerrie Sanford, Ashley Waters, Kalie, Faith, Lori and Amie Godfrey, Kelli Dianellos and Lane Godfrey; and step-granddaughter, Bridgett Matthews. Eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Pallbearers were: Steven and Terry Wilson, Lane, Roger and Jamie Godfrey and Charlie Gibson.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 20, from Town Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Timms officiating. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Elaine O’Bryant

On June 24, Elaine Cox O’Bryant, devoted wife and mother, slipped away from her earthly home and joined her husband Herschel, sons Charles, Ricky and Caleb and great- granddaughter Amber.

Ms. Elaine was born Dec. 20, 1921. She passed away at Rock Creek Assisted living Center. She was a resident of Tate her entire life and attended Tate UMC for 87 years. She was active in her community and worked at the onset of Head Start as parent/teacher coordinator.

She leaves behind her two daughters, Pat and Harry Jinks,  Ball Ground, and Sally and Tony Eubanks, Tate. Grandchildren are Scott and wife Rose Jinks and their children Taylor and Madison of Cumming, Rhonda Jinks, Atlanta, Tracey and husband Dale Voyles and their children Caitlyn and Matt,  Colorado. She also leaves several nieces and one nephew, Charles Cox, of Tate.

Her life was spent in her walk with God and now she will find peace in the arms of her Saviour.

The service was held at Tate UMC at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, with the Rev. Thom Shores, pastor at Bright Star UMC of Douglasville, officiating. Interment was in Cool Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jack Hausman, Tommy Platt, Brad White, Jim Miller, Bob Perdue, Jimmy Lee and Jerry Andrews. Gerhard Sauer

Mr. Gerhard Josef Sauer, age 75 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012, at his home following a period of declining health.

Born on May 26, 1937, in Heidelberg, Germany, Gerhard led an interesting life. Having left Germany in the mid 1960’s, he moved first to Australia, then to the United States. Although Gerhard held many jobs over his lifetime, his profession was as a mechanical engineer. He traveled extensively with his profession and was instrumental in developing the process for making seamless, two-piece aluminum cans. Gerhard worked with precision to assure each machine ran like clockwise – German engineering.

Gerhard was a patient, loving man. Anyone who knew him considered him one of the kindest men they ever knew. His wife, Eve, considered him the most loving man she ever knew. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Rest in peace, sweet Gerhard.

He attended Jasper United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilde Sauer.

He is survived by his wife, Eve R. Sauer, Jasper; sister, Elfrieda Gund, Plankstadt, Germany; and step-brother, Seigfreid Fildebrand and his Wife Monica, Heidelberg, Germany. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

The funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, June 30, from Jasper United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chip Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Forest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Roper Funeral Home on Saturday, June 30, from 10-11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 300 West Emery Street, Dalton, Ga. 30720, or to the Jasper United Methodist Church, 85 West Church Street, Jasper, Ga. 30143.


Kenneth Atkins

Mr. Kenneth Ray “Ken” Atkins, age 64 of Waleska, Ga., passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at his home following a period of declining health.

Born on Dec. 10, 1947, in San Antonio, Tx., Mr. Atkins worked for the US Government as a Federal Investigator and was also a member of the United States Air Force. Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his father, Marcus Jefferson Atkins.

Survivors include his wife, Paula Atkins, Waleska; daughter, Tracy Williams, Rowlett, Tx.; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Mara Atkins, Coppell, Tx.; mother, Helen Atkins, Columbus, Ms.; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Maureen Atkins, Jasper, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Rudy Manning, Columbus, Ms.; and grandchildren, Tyler and Tristan Williams and Marcus and Jackson Atkins. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

At his request, Mr. Atkins was cremated. A private Celebration of Life will be held at the family’s residence with a public graveside service and burial of cremains at Georgia National Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 6, with military honors.
