Jack I. (born JI) Hosford died in Gainesville, Ga., on May 21, 2012, after a brief and unexpected illness. He was 87 years of age.
Jack was born in Atlanta, Ga., on June 28, 1925, to Ann Bowen Hosford and James Isaac Hosford. Jack grew up in Atlanta along with three brothers, a sister, and two step-sisters. He attended Boy’s High and later Oglethorpe College. He married Helen Elizabeth (Betty) Akers from Atlanta in 1953, and they had a wonderful 59-year marriage. Their son, David, was born in 1955. Jack and Betty lived successively in Decatur, Atlanta, Big Canoe and Gainesville, Ga.
Jack had a wide variety of careers. He was a Cadet in the Army Air Force during WWII and was training as a bombardier when the war ended. Over the next several decades he was also a newspaper journalist, a realtor and a custom home builder. He had many talents and he continued to volunteer his time and creative energies at both Big Canoe and Lanier Village Estates. He was a well-loved resident of Lanier Village Estates at the time of his death. More importantly he was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, an honorable role model for his family and a trustworthy and faithful friend to many - in short, a true gentleman. We will miss his constant smile and legendary sense of humor.
Jack is survived by his wife, Betty, Lanier Village Estates, Gainesville, Ga.; his son, David, and daughter-in-law, Sandy, Durham, N.C.; his granddaughters, Katherine and Anna, Durham, N.C.; his brother, Bill, and sister-in-law, Julie, Lawrenceville, Ga.; his sister-in-law, Prentiss Hosford, Lanier Village Estates; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service and reception for Jack was held on Friday, May 25, at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be made to First Presbyterian Church, or to the Ronnie Green Heart Center of NE Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
The family thanks the many excellent doctors and nurses who took expert and loving care of Jack during his final days.
Dewayne L. Holbert, age 60 of Talking Rock, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Kennestone Hospital.
A Life Celebration was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Gayton officiating. A reception was held following the service for family and friends. Mr. Holbert was cremated.
Mr. Holbert served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Cheri Holbert, Talking Rock; mother, Elsie Holbert, Canton; children, Michael Holbert, California, Tony Holbert, Odum, Ga., and Lani Mason, Canton; and siblings, Linda Tinsley and Wanda Cornett, both of Jasper, Barbara Holbert, Ellijay, and Darrell and Kenneth Holbert, both of Canton. Mr. Jimmy Baldwin, age 76 of Ball Ground, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Baldwin retired from Georgia Marble and was a member of Ophir Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Pauline Baldwin; and brothers, Marvin and Bob Baldwin.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Pendley Baldwin; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Martha Baldwin; daughter, Donna Cagle; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Richard Ridings; grandchildren, Paul and Maggie Ridings, Brandon Ridings and Sara Krausz and Randy and Ashley Sengbusch; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Avery and Autumn Ridings; and sisters, Bonnell Waters and Frances Baldwin.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 25, at Ophir Baptist Church with the Revs. Troy Milford, Clyde Boling and Gary Parker officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Stephen Austin George Goddard, age 87 of Jasper, Ga., passed away on May 24, 2012. Stephen is predeceased by his wife, Sheila Spence Goddard; and great-granddaughter, Kaylee Goddard.
He was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Ellenwood and the American Legion Post in Jasper. He also served in the British Armed Forces for 28 years and a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Betty Leslein Goddard; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila-Marie and Johnny Johnson, sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen D. and Christine Goddard, Robin A. and Carolyn Goddard, Christopher and Fridah Goddard, and John and Hillary Squires; and grandchildren, Stephen D. Scott Goddard, Robert Alexander Goddard, Stephen Lloyd Goddard, Andrew James Goddard, Johnathan D. Goddard, Joshua Lee Goddard, Everill Anne Faircloth, W.J. Faircloth III, Jeremiah Johnson, Johnny Johnson, Jr., Leah Johnson and Kelly Johnson. Ten great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 30, at 1 p.m. at Horis A. Ward Fairview Chapel with interment following at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Auldon “Bud” Eaton, age 82 of Canton, Ga., passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012, at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Eaton, Canton; sons, Alan (Sandy) Eaton, Canton, and Ricky Eaton, Jasper; brothers, Arnold Eaton, Jasper, and Donny Eaton, Canton; and sister, Wilma Childers, Canton. Three grandchildren, three step- grandchildren and one great- grandchild also survive.

Mrs. Vennie Harris Martin, age 96 of Jasper, Ga., died Monday, May 28, 2012, at the Heritage Health Care in Jasper following a period of declining health.
Born May 12, 1916, in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Skid and Lily Jane Cordele Harris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer Martin; son, J.S. Martin; sister, Azalee Van Sickle; brother, Berlin Harris; and grandson, Steve (Corky) Martin.
Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and was a member for over 80 years at Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Mack and Cheryl Martin, Jasper; and grandchildren and spouses, Jean and James Hancock, Joey and Sharmon Martin, Brittany and Greg Payne and Kristin Martin, all of Jasper. Six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, from Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. Gene Childers and Buck Parker officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Royle John Kipp, Sr.
Royle “Roy” Kipp, Sr., age 78 of the Yukon Community of Ellijay, Ga., passed from this life Saturday, May 19, 2012.
He was born Nov. 25, 1933, to his late parents, Lyman Eichel and Edna Gertrude Steinworth Kipp in Ardsley, N.Y. He attended Ardsley High School, Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, Pa., earned an appointment to West Point and attended Gettysburg College. He became captain of the Ardsley Fire Department, vice president of the family business “Kipp Brothers, Inc.,” retiring in 1977. He was superintendent of Streets and Drainage in Naples, Fl., before retiring to the mountains of Ellijay in 1996.
Survivors include wife of 56 years, Janet Orr Kipp, of the home in Ellijay; daughters and sons-in-law, Candace and Mark Hahner of Jasper, Ga., Cheryl and Willard Bryant and Caren and Mitchell Coleman, all of Ellijay; sons, Royle J. Kipp, Jr., Tampa, Fl., Scott Kipp, West Palm Beach, Fl., William Kipp and fiance`, Dawne Cohoon, Naples, Fa.; 10 grandchildren, Royle J. Kipp III, Dane Coleman, Chad Coleman, Brandon S. Kipp, John Michael Barker, David L. Kipp, William E. Kipp Jr., Lauren N. Kipp, Danielle N. Kipp and Caitlin Royle Coleman; three great-grandchildren, Avah Kipp, Royle J. Kipp IV and Blake Coleman. Many more loving family and friends also survive.
A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, June 2, from the Good Samaritan Catholic Church of Ellijay with Father Randy Mattox officiating. Mr. Johnny Padgett, age 50 of Jasper, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, in Forsyth County as the result of a motorcycle accident.
Survivors include his mother and father, Frances and Jake Padgett; grandmother, Parris Bennett Holt; son, Elijah Padgett, all of Jasper; and sister, Angela Kidd, Stockbridge.
Visitation was held at Cagle Funeral Home Wednesday, May 23, from 3-10 p.m. and Thursday at Lauren McDonald Funeral Home in Cumming. The funeral service was held 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Mr. Don Musgrave officiating. Interment followed at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper. Pallbearers were: Mike Jones, Elijah Padgett, Jacob Bryant, Steve Biles, Dan Johnson and Joshua Kidd.
