One of the most exciting spring weekends in Jasper is coming up May 10-12 as the Pickens County Sportsman’s Club prepares for their annual Fishing Days at Cove Creek.
The Department of Natural Resources provides 4,000 trout for the three-day event, releasing 2,000 into the creek on Wednesday and another 2,000 on Friday. On Thursday, May 10 physically disabled members of the community are invited to fish; Friday, May 11 is for senior citizens; and Saturday, May 12 is for kids age 15 and under who are accompanied by an adult.
Fishing is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The first 400 kids to arrive Saturday get a free T-shirt donated by Sharp Mountain Graphics owner Jerry Greer. “We usually have between 500-600 kids there on Saturdays,” said Jerry Steele, a member of the Sportsman Club. “We’re looking forward to putting this on this year.”
Members of the sportsman’s club will be serving free hot dogs, drinks and chips each day. Kids are allowed to keep eight fish and, although adults are not allowed to fish, assisting younger kids is encouraged.
Steele said this is the 27th year club members have hosted the event.
