PHS Athletic Director
I am excited to announce that PHS is starting an organization that is long overdue in Pickens County: the Pickens High School Athletics Hall of Fame. The PHS Athletics Hall of Fame has been organized as a way of maintaining the rich heritage and tradition of successful athletic programs at Pickens High School. In addition, it will serve as a means of recognizing and honoring the athletes, coaches and individuals who made significant contributions to the athletic programs at Pickens High.
The PHS Athletics Hall of Fame is meant to acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of individuals who are worthy of recognition and who have stood as examples for others to emulate. Click here for a nomination form
I am currently in the process of forming the Hall of Fame Committee that will vote on the nominations made by our community.
Who is eligible for the PHS Athletics Hall of Fame? Individuals and teams may be nominated from three categories. The nominee, if an alumnus, must be five years removed from Pickens High School. An exception to this rule may be made if the PHS Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee unanimously chooses to bypass this requirement. Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and character. All candidates will be judged on their significant and/or long-term contributions to Pickens High School Athletics.
• Athlete/Team: Those who distinguished themselves on the field of athletics while students at Pickens High School.
• Coach: Any coach with at least 5 years of coaching experience. The nominee must be inactive and removed from coaching for 5 years before they are eligible. Criteria for consideration should be based on accomplishments that merit statewide recognition or significant contributions to the athletic programs at Pickens High School.
• Contributor: An individual who has made outstanding contributions to the interscholastic athletic programs at Pickens High School other than coaching or participating.
The inaugural Hall of Fame Class will be inducted during the fall of 2012 and the winter of 2013, being recognized during a home football game and basketball game. We would like to induct five-six members into this class (three during football season and three during basketball season). The individuals selected will not only be honored at a sporting event but will receive a plaque which will list their accomplishments and contributions to PHS. An identical plaque will also be placed on the wall outside of our gymnasium in the new Hall of Fame area. In regards to awards given posthumously, immediate families will be invited to represent the inductee.
Who can nominate a candidate? Candidates may be nominated by the PHS Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee, current or former faculty, administration or staff or an alumnus of PHS. All entries must be submitted on the PHS Athletics Hall of Fame Nomination Form. I have included in this newspaper a copy of the nomination form that must be submitted in order for a nomination to be considered by the committee. Current and accurate information must be contained on the nomination form in order for the candidate to be considered. The PHS Athletics Hall of Fame Nomination Form will be available on the PHS Sports website as well as in the front office of PHS.
Again, I am extremely excited to begin this process for Pickens High School and the community of Jasper. Before we can completely and properly build the best Athletic Department at Pickens High School, I believe it’s fitting that we recognize and honor those who have best exemplified what it means to be a Dragon. Please submit your nominees for consideration and take notice of future information regarding our Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Thanks again for all of your support and GO Dragons!
