Nettes come up short by 1 -- still state bound

Updated Saturday: PHS lost by one to Gilmer Saturday afternoon, 35-34. The Nettes lead for most of the game but faltered at the end. The team missed several scoring opportunities near the buzzer. The team, however, still advances to the state tournament next weekend. See complete recap in next week's print edition.

Updated: The Nettes lost to Allatoona 57-45 Friday night. The game was close for most of the contest before Allatoona moved ahead late. The Nettes will face Gilmer Saturday to determine the 3rd and 4th seeds.

Pickens team qualifies for state tournament



The PHS Nettes basketball team qualified for the state tournament Thursday night with a 56-35 win over Heritage High School. The Nettes will play in the Region semi-finals tonight (Friday) against state ranked Allatoona at 7 p.m.

With a win tonight the Pickens team will play for the Region championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday. If they lose, the Nettes will play at 3 p.m. "The team has worked hard for this chance to represent our high school in the state playoffs," said Athletic Director Kyle Rasco.

The State playoff games will be held next Friday or Saturday.

The Nettes are currently 19-8 overall on the season.

In last night’s game with Heritage, PHS placed four players in double digit scoring. Makayla Angel and Kadie Mullinax each had 12 points. Sarah Smith scored 11 points and Kristen Garner contributed 10 points.
