The Sassafras Literary Exchange Annual Youth Writing Contest will begin February 6, 2012. The contest is open to all Pickens County students including Home School Students doing Middle School and High School work. Entries of 1,500 words or less may be fiction, non-fiction, or poetry.
“The Compassionate Classroom” is the theme for this year’s contest. Entries may include discussions, stories, or other creative tools that highlight real or fictional examples of empathy and concern for others in a learning environment. Entries may also give ideas on how to encourage and inspire compassion in the structured classroom, team sports or other school activities.
Entries must be typed and double spaced with the author’s name and school listed on an attached separate sheet of paper. Sassafras Literary Exchange members will collect the entries from Pickens County Schools following the contest deadline of March 19, 2012. A panel of judges will select the winning entries based on creativity, writing style, grammar and spelling.
Winners will receive awards at a special ceremony the week of April 9, 2012. The winners will be announced in the Pickens County Progress and their work posted on www.Pickensprogressonline.com in the April 18 issue.
