Mr. Brenton Dee Cook, age 43 of Crandall, Ga., departed this life Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. Brenton was born Feb. 9, 1968, in Gordon County, a son of Franklin and Barbara Thompson Cook. He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Dee Cook.
Brenton is survived by his estranged wife, Libby Ludue Cook; his mother, Mrs. Barbara Cook; son and daughter-in-law, Brenton and Kristy Cook, Fairmount; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Gary Mayfield, Fairmount; his special friend and companion, Sadonna “Sissy” Layman; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Debroah Green, Cass, Ga., Sandy and Michael Gallman, Calhoun, Ga., and Theresa and Lee Tucker, Dalton Ga. He also had a grandson, Gary Ray Mayfield III.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Cook was held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 22, 2 p.m. from the Fairmount Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home in Fairmount Ga. Interment followed at Pleasant Grove (RYO) Baptist Church Cemetery in Fairmount. Mrs. Catherine Ramey, age 87 of Jasper, passed Wednesday evening, Dec. 21, 2011, at Sonshine Manor ALF in Jasper.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Tracy Stancil, Jasper; sister, Evelyn Hart, California; grandchildren, Codi and Steven Pierce and Dylan Stancil; and special niece, Joyce Rivers. Other nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. James Thomason officiated. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park with Dylan and Tracy Stancil, Steven Pierce, Daniel Mojahedi and Jackson Martinez serving as pallbearers. The family did accept flowers but they would prefer that memorials be made to Cagle Funeral Home to assist with the funeral expenses.
Mr. Ron Wright, age 64 of Jasper, passed early Monday morning, Dec. 19, 2011, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Wright, Jasper; son, Phillip Wright, Hiram, Ga.; daughters and son-in-law, Robin and Salvador Ramirez, Alpharetta, Ga., Ann Parris, Jasper, and Shelby Hathcock, Adairsville,Ga.; brothers, Tony Wright, Rockmart,Ga., Bryan Wright, Stockbridge, Ga., Scotty Wright, Acworth, Ga., and Dennis Wright, Powder Springs, Ga.; and sisters, Jane Wilkins, Acworth, Ga., and Jimmie Lou Avevisian, Calhoun, Ga. Five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Crowe officiated. Interment followed in Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Ga., with Local Chapter #47 DAV in charge of military graveside rites. Serving as pallbearers were: Bernard Desmond, Brandon and Bobby Parris, Dustin Clark, Chip Davis, Dusty Sewell and Patrick Wright.
Mrs. Telete Grotefend, age 81 of Jasper, Ga., passed early Tuesday morning, Dec. 20, 2011 at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, Ga.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Nancy Grotefend, Pratville, Al.; daughter and son-in-law, Christell and Jerry Smith, Acworth, Ga.; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs Grotefend was preceded in death by husband, Richard Grotefend; parents, Telete and Will Richards; and brother, Will Richards.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. from Jasper United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chip Wilson officiated. Interment followed in the Jasper City Cemetery with Alvin Stewart, Al Lawson, Mark Medlock, Scott Grotefend, Hugh Pearson and Tonnie Buttery serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Ruby Green Stephens, age 71 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper, following a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 2, 1940, in Tate, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Carl Green, Sr. and Annie Belle Jackson Stephens. Mrs. Stephens had worked as a sander with Georgia Marble and was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jerome Benson, Tate, Ga., Julia and Eddie Story, Marietta, Ga., Linda Durham, Austell, Ga., and Janet Wotring, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Carla Stephens, Marble Hill, Ga., Cecil and Donyell Stephens, Nelson, Ga., Willie and Tiffany Stephens and Anthony Stephens, all of Tate, Ga.; 26 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl Green, Jr., Knoxville, Tn., Bill Green, Canton, Ga., and Roger and Allen Green, both of Tate, Ga. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Mrs. Louise Kindall Hightower, age 63 of Talking Rock, Ga., died Friday, Dec. 23, 2011.
Mrs. Hightower was born on Feb. 24, 1948, in Gilmer Co. She is the daughter of the late Dave and Belle Long Kindall. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Murray County, Ga. She was preceded in death by brothers, E.J., W.L. and Spurgeon Kindall; and a sister, Laura Banks.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Lee Hightower of the home; daughter, Buffy Strickland, Murphy, N.C.; sister, Mary Nell Chester, Chatsworth, Ga.; grandchildren, Ashley Cain, Coty, Brittany and Deston Hunt, all of Cleveland, Tn.; and great- grandchildren, Bentley Cain and Chloe Hunt, Cleveland, Tn.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Hightower, Bobby Timms and Larry Kindall officiating. Interment followed in the Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Talking Rock.
Rose Marie Moss
Mrs. Rose Marie Moss, known to everyone as “Boots,” age 80, of Jasper, Ga., passed away at her home, on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, after an extended illness.
Born June 23, 1931, in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Alvirt Lewis and Julie Haden McKee Lewis. A native of Atlanta, “Boots” previously lived in Oakwood and Stone Mountain before retiring with her husband to Jasper in 1997. She had worked as a secretary for the Fulton County Board of Education.
“Boots” was known for her involvement in many local organizations including AARP, the local Republican Party and the volunteer auxiliary at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. She was a member of the Jasper United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas (Bill) Moss, Jasper; sons, Kevin C. Moss (Sue Conley, finance’), Houston, Tx., and Randy L. Moss and wife Regina, Dahlonega, Ga.; and grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Moss.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Preston Jones officiating. Interment to follow at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga. The family received friends at Roper Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jasper United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. James (Jimmy) Poss, age 66 of Marble Hill, passed Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at his residence.
Survivors include his brothers, Jesse Poss, Stone Mountain, Joel Poss, Marble Hill, and Ervin Poss, Bogart, Ga., and sisters, Shirley Poss and Jo Ann Jones, both of Marble Hill. Several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Cagle Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. No funeral service or memorial service is planned at this time. The family requests instead of flowers, please make donations to Cagle Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.
Mr. J.M. “Jim” Johnson, age 76 of Loganville, Ga., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011.
Mr. Johnson was born May 25, 1935, in Marble Hill, Ga. He worked for Gwinnett County as a heavy equipment mechanic.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janice Lee Baucom Johnson, Loganville; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Gail and James Fitts, Nelson, Ga., and Tammy and Tim Stancil, Jasper, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sue Johnson and Ricky Johnson, all of Ball Ground, Ga., Anthony Wayne and Jennifer Gunter, Athens, Ga., Michael and Matthew Gunter, both of Loganville, Ga., Phillip Gunter, Lawrenceville, Ga., and Marshall Gunter, Loganville, Ga.; granddaughter, Jessica Gunter, Loganville, Ga.; 42 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mozelle Walker, Marble Hill, Ga., and Jewell Reeves, Dawsonville, Ga. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The family received friends at Flanigan Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday evening from 4-8 p.m. There was no funeral service.
Phillip Ellington, age 64 of Canton, Ga., passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Cissy Ellington, Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Sascha Ellington, Norcross, Ga., Seth and Haley Ellington, Roswell, Ga., and Evan Ellington, Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Kim Ellington, Vale, N.C.; sister, Lydia Cody Ravenel, South Carolina; and step-children, Walker and Becky Cloud and Betsy and Josh Graham, all of Canton. Seven grandchildren also survive.
