Broughton Fred Stancil, age 96 of Ball Ground, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at his residence.
Broughton and his parents have operated Stancil Store on the corner of Conns Creek and Yellow Creek Road for 99 years. He graduated from Mica School and attended Reinhardt College and Berry College. Broughton served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran who was cited for courageous conduct during action in British New Guinea. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Survivors include his children, Marilyn Harvey, Susan West, Ann Reagan, Mark Stancil and Dawn Hopkins; sister, Loraine Ruddell; grandchildren, Cathryn Forney, Carrie Jones, Ryan Harvey, Lee Reagan, Steven Roper, Lynn Reagan, Julie Mess, Will Stancil, Lauren Haygood, Eli, Caleb and Noah Hopkins; and great-grandchildren, Reece Jones and Caden Forney.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Dr. John Reale and the Rev. Max Padgett officiating. Interment was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at the Georgia National Cemetery. Flowers were accepted; however, memorials may be made in his memory to the Mt. Ms. Robin Quarles Cowart, age 49, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, in Ball Ground, Ga.
Ms. Cowart is survived by her son, Joseph Lee Cowart, Jasper, Ga.; brothers, Jack and Larry Quarles, Ball Ground; and sisters, Judy Williams and Melba Stuart, both of Ball Ground, Connie Freeman, Chatsworth, Ga., and Lynn Tidwell, Jasper, Al.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, from Ball Ground First Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Poe and Evangelist Meadoe Solomon officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Larry Ray, Dennis Freeman, Billy, Roy and Bobby Joe Williams and Bobby Kline. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Bernard A. Steed, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 28, 2011 at his home in Jasper, GA. He was born December 21, 1922 to Leonard L. and Edith (Reilly) Steed in Johnson City, NY.
He served as a First Lieutenant and B-25 pilot in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. During his 66 missions, he earned the Air Medal with 8 Oak Leaf clusters, a Distinguished Unit Badge, a European campaign ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, and a Distinguished Flying Cross. The DFC recognized his accomplishment in successfully ditching his damaged plane in the ocean with only one engine and evacuating his whole crew before the plane sank.
He was employed at Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company for 24 years before moving to Jasper where he managed Pickens Footwear Company and served as Vice-President of Manufacturing for Gold Seal Rubber Company. He remained with the business when it changed hands in later years for 30 total years of service. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Jasper Jeep for many more years.
Mr. Steed was a founding and faithful member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Jasper. He had been a respected community leader and an avid golfer throughout his years in Jasper.
He is survived by a son, Joseph M. Steed and wife Rita (Beran) of Greenville, DE; one granddaughter, Jennifer L. Hunter and husband Michael of Atlanta, GA; two great-grandsons Daniel and Benjamin Hunter of Atlanta, GA; and sisters-in-law Joyce Steed, Doris Steed, and Jeanne Cole. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his wife of 49 years, Jayne L. (Cole), and his son, William T. “Bill” Steed.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity, 780 Ridge Road, Lackawanna, NY 14218-1682 in recognition of Mr. Steed’s support for adoption; or to Pickens Animal Rescue, P. O. Box 45, Jasper, GA 30143.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church on December 2, 2011. Arrangements were handled by Cagle Funeral Home.
Mrs. Belle Bunch Reid, 89 of Atlanta, formerly of Ellijay died Friday December 2, 2011.
Mrs. Reid was born February 22, 1922 in Pickens Co. the daughter of the late James Washington Bunch and Bessie Bearden Bunch. She worked for Nabisco as a floor supervisor for 43 years and was of the Baptist Faith. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bert M. Reid.
Survivors include: Daughter: Deborah Reid, Lilburn, GA; Son and daughter-in-law: Gary E. and Donna Reid, Sandy Springs, GA; Grandchildren: Madison Reid and Matthew B. Reid, both of Atlanta.
Funeral services were held Monday Dec. 5, 2011 at 2pm from the Ball Creek Baptist Church with Min. Rance Sprayberry officiating. Music will be by the Ball Creek Baptist Church Choir. Her nephews served as pallbearers.
Interment will be in the Ball Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Opal Watson Jordan
Opal Mary Watson Jordan age 85 of Chattanooga, TN, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 30th, 2011, with her four children at her side. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church of Red Bank for 23 years and was active within the Prime Timers ministry.
Born October 21st, 1926 to her late parents soloman and Mae Crane Watson in Dawsonville, Georgia. Ms. Jordan was known for her jovial personality and active lifestyle. She leaves her family and those fortunately enough to have known her, with a legacy of devotion to the Lord, consistency in His word, passion for His people, and always finding a way to encourage others to do the same.
She was a retiree of Kraft Foods after 17 years of employment. She is preceded in death by son Donnie Kinser; sisters Alma Hice, Mamie Chester and Helen Millsaps.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Connie and Rev. Carroll Holbrooks of Ellijay, GA., Kathi and Tommy Freeman of Chattanooga, TN.; sons and daughters-in-law David and Hilda Kinser of Jasper, GA., Gene and Patsy Kinser of Ooltewah, TN.; brothers Howard Watson and Pete Watson of Ellijay, GA.; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 4th, 2011 from Clear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Bishop, Rev. Russell Hood, Rev. Dwight Martin and Rev. Carroll Holbrooks officiating. Rev. William Darnell
Rev. William H. Darnell, 85, of Canton, Ga. passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 at Embracing Hospice.
Rev. Darnell was a member of the Pickens County DAV Chapter 47, the Blaine Masonic Lodge, and the Cherry Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 6 at the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Allen, Rev. Grant Wade, and Rev. Glen Moody officiating. Interment followed at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.
