Gene Stone

Mr. Gene Stone, age 70 of Ranger, Ga., passed early Monday morning, June 27, 2011, at the residence.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Pauline Stone and Larry Stone and Jennifer Smith, all of Ranger; and sisters, Ollie Hightower, Talking Rock, Myrtice Swafford, Fairmount, Ruthelle Cornett, Geneva and Junior Fountain and Oris and James Hendrix, all of Ranger, Aris and Billy Reed, Fairmount, and Faye and Ed Young, Ranger. A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 29, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Bobby Timms and Hubert Pack officiating. Interment followed in Mountain Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jeremy and Glen Stone, Terry and Tony Fountain, Ronne and Randy Swafford, Scott Turner and Marshall Young. The family did accept flowers but prefer donations to Cagle Funeral Home to help with the funeral expenses.

Thomas Harris, Jr.

Mr. Thomas Buren “Tommy” Harris, Jr., age 62 of Jasper, Ga., died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at his residence following a period of declining health.

Born Jan.7, 1949, Mr. Harris was a self-employed roofer in the home repair industry.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Harris, Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Margie and Max Smith, Jefferson, Ga., Mary Sue and Robert Harris, Helen, Ga., Roxsand and Vaughn Gautreaux, Oakwood, Ga., Tracy Harris, Alabama, Crystal and Joey Harris, Terri and Carl Crawford and Leann Thompson, all of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Shane and Lynn Harris, Ellijay, Ga., sister, Sandra Davis, Dallas, Ga., cousins/brothers, Kenny Harris, Dallas, Ga., and Danny Cantrell, Cartersville, Ga.; and nephew, Charles Edward Harris, Alpharetta, Ga., Twenty-three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

The funeral service was held  Friday, July 1, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. David LeGrande officiating. At his request, Mr. Harris will be cremated following the funeral service.

Virginia Edwards

Mrs. Virginia Edwards, age 75 of Nelson, passed away at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, James Edwards, Nelson; daughters and sons-in-law, Shelia and Howard Stamey, Nelson, and Marilyn and Wade Forrester, Tate; and son, George Edwards, Epworth. Five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home. Entombment followed in Cherokee Memorial Park.

Marla Mahan

Mrs. Marla Michelle Mahan, age 41 of Waleska, Ga., departed this life Thursday, June 30, 2011, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Marla was born Oct. 30, 1969, in Cherokee County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Noble and Wrethel Higdon Mahan and Roy Wright; and brother, Casey Mahan.

Survivors include her son and his fiancee, Bradley McDaniel and Brittany Taylor; granddaughter, Lillie McDaniel; father, Gene Mahan; mother, Linda W. Brooks, all of Waleska; grandmother, Ora Grace Wright, Jasper, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vikki and Russell Simmons, Canton, and Kellie and Bryon Reeves, Waleska; and nieces and nephew, Emily Reeves, Cheyenne Chadwick and Seth Reeves. Several aunts and uncles also survive.

Services to celebrate her life were held Sunday, July 3, at 1 p.m. at the Salacoa Baptist Church with Rev. Travis Childers officiating. She was laid to rest in the church cemetery. Ponders Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Madge Holloway

Mrs. Madge Holloway, age 81 of Ball Ground, passed away on July 1, 2011.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pledger Holloway; and grandchildren, Jessica Ray and Bryce Roper.

Survivors include her children, Larry and Leonard Holloway, Ball Ground, Romona Floyd, Hartwell, Ga., and Katherine Hensley, Dawsonville; and siblings, Billy Goforth and Portia Hensley, Marble Hill, and Robbie Gene McElwayne, Marietta. Eight grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, from Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Revs. Gary Kowen and  John Henderson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Sosebee Funeral Home, Canton, in charge of arrangements.

Bill Payne

Bill Payne, age 87, passed away on June 24. An informal memorial will be held at his home at 45 Upward Path, Jasper, Ga. 30143, on July 9 at 2 p.m.

Betty Carver

Mrs. Betty Wofford Carver, age 67 of Calhoun, died Monday, July 4, 2011, at her residence following several years of declining health.

She was born in Pickens County on Jan. 8, 1944, daughter of the late Henry and Rosa Goode Wofford. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Arvil, George and Houston Wofford; and sister, Ivy Newberry.

Mrs. Carver was a homemaker during her lifetime and a member of the Hinton Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Troy Wayne Carver of the residence; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Jason Jaco, Calhoun; brother, James Wofford, Yellow Creek, Ga.; sisters, Patsy Roper, Yellow Creek, and Jane Pritchett, Jasper; grandson, Jordan Tanner Jaco; and step-grandchildren, Hannah, Taylor, Jared and Jada Jaco. Nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 6, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Revs. Gene Childers, Eddie Brannon and Kenny Rogers officiating. Interment followed in the Hinton Community Center. Pallbearers were: Trenton and Barry Roper, Joey Strickland, Tony Watson and David and Howard Carver. Honorary pallbearers were Lane and Alec Strickland.

Jerrel Garland

Mr. Jerrel Garland, age 72 of Ellijay, Ga., passed from this life Sunday, June 26, 2011, at his residence.

He was of the Baptist faith, born Jan. 26, 1939, to his late parents, William Worth and Jessie Lela Tatum Garland in Ellijay, Whitestone, Ga. Mr. Garland was employed at CKS Plastics.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Mark Combs, Marietta, Ga., and Sonya and Joseph White, Fountain, Col; sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Tammy Garland, Ft. Payne, Al., Dwayne and Christy Garland, Breman, Ga., Jamie and Christy Garland, Villa Rica, Ga., and Michael and Shelly Garland, Blue Ridge, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Louise Garland McReynolds, Calhoun, and Wylene Garland Wilkie and Diane and Keith Hales, all of Jasper; and brothers and sister-in-law, Earl and Evelyn Garland, Jasper, and Eugene Garland, Talking Rock, Ga.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, from Logan Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Wallace Parks and Coy Richards officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. Donations may be made to the William Garland Memorial Fund, PO Box 485, Ellijay, Ga. 30540.
