Mary Tatum

Mrs. Mary Katherine White Tatum, age 88 of Tate, passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2011.

Mary was born May 1, 1923, and was the daughter of the late James Lewis and Edith Pearl White of Tate, Ga. She was a member of the 1940 graduating class from Tate High School. She was also an active member of Jasper First Baptist Church until her recent illness. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mary is survived by her husband of 68 years, Hugh Tatum; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Harold Teague; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sandy Tatum and Tommy and Juanita Tatum, all of Pickens County; grandchildren, Josh and Hilary Tatum, Jasper, Jessie and Robert Ford, Macon Ga., Rachel and Aaron Finch, Madison, Al., Casey and Ryan Shostak, LaGrange, Ga., and Jacob Tatum, Jasper; great-grandchildren, Jack and Agatha Tatum; and siblings, Edna and Max Wood, Tate, and Don and Beth White, Jasper. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, J.L., Herb and Pete White; and sisters, Hazel White and Ann Ponder.

A service to celebrate Mary’s life was held at Jasper First Baptist Church on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. with the Revs. Jimmy Lewis and Von Hinton officiating. She was laid to rest at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Tate. Pallbearers included nephews: Bill, John and Donnie White, Jim Wood and Phillip and Bill Tatum. It was Mary’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the building fund at Jasper First Baptist, 198 E Church St., Jasper, Ga. 30143, or Georgia Mountains Hospice, 70 Caring Way, PO Box 580, Jasper, Ga. 30143. The caring staff of Roper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Howard

Mrs. Shirley Howard, age 70 of Tate, Ga., passed Friday morning, May 13, 2011, at Wildwood Health Care in Talking Rock.

Survivors include her husband, Fay Howard, Tate; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Debbie Howard, Cagletown, and Wendell and Becky Howard, Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Terry Goode, Jasper; sisters, Lucille Evans and Loraine Perry, both of Dawsonville, Jeanette Howard, Jasper, Erline Burden, Elberton, and Wynelle Morris, Jasper; grandchildren, Jeremy, Gabriel and Danyell Howard, Amanda and David Duncan, Misty and Brian Collett, and Tonya Goode (deceased); and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Anabelle Duncan and Isabella and Tristian Collett.

The funeral service was held Sunday, May 15 at 2:30 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Howard and George Ziemer officiating. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were: David Duncan, Jeremy and Gabriel Howard, Spud Collett, John Teague and David Dodd.

James Blackwell

Mr. James E. “Jim” Blackwell, age 81 of Ball Ground, passed away Sunday morning, May 15, 2011, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Faye (Sperin) Blackwell, Ball Ground; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Gaye Lynn Blackwell, Jasper, and Clark and Terri Blackwell, Canton; brothers, W.C., Jr., Jack, Jerry and Roy Blackwell, all of Jasper, and Joe Blackwell, Henagar, Al.; sisters, Lila Johnson, Pensacola, Fl., Sue Tatum, Canton, Joyce Davis, Omaha, Ne., and Patricia Blackwell, Fort Myers, Fl.; grandchildren, Cole and Amanda, Waleska, Clint and Kristin, Ellijay, and Cody and Catie, Canton; and great-grandchildren, Mac, Lauren and Knox, all of Waleska, and Zed, Ellijay. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Evans and Tim McFarland officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper. Pallbearers were: Cole, Clint, Cody, Clark and Mark Blackwell and Tim McFarland. The family did receive flowers but prefer contributions be made to Mica Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Hubert Sperin, 6694 Yellow Creek road, Ball Ground, Ga. 30107.

Becky Woodall

Mrs. Becky Herren Woodall, 70, a resident of Lake Martin, Al., passed away unexpectedly in the tragic tornado on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, along with her sister, Mrs. Alice Herren Lee.

Mrs. Woodall is survived by  her sons, Dr. Bud Woodall (Leanne)  and  David Woodall (Sherry)  and  her son-at-heart,  Warren Tate. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rebecca Claire Woodall,  Daniel Woodall  and  Lizzy Woodall;  her sister, Vivian Toellner (Bruce);  and  several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Woodall is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. W. Carvel Woodall, Jr.; and  parents,  Arnold Whitfield and Fannie Herren.

The family received friends Sunday, May 1,  from 3-5  p.m. at Jeffcoat Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hotel Talisi,  2 Sistrunk Street,   Tallassee,  Al. 36078.
