Obituaries for April 14, 2011 - David Bernard, Ruby Hamrick, Ruth Jones, Jim Hammontree, Kent Glancies

David Bernard

Mr. David Michael Bernard, age 60 of Jasper, Ga., died Saturday, April 2, 2011, at his residence following a sudden illness.

Born on April 11, 1950, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Armand and Angie Bernard, Mr. Bernard was a self-employed photographer. Mr. Bernard was also a member of the Pensacola Fly Fisher Club. Mr. Bernard was preceded in death by his mother, Angie Bernard.

He is survived by his father, “Frenchy” Bernard, Sun City Center, Fl.; and brothers, Jack Bernard, Monticello, Ga., Richard Bernard, Woodland Hills, Ca., and Tony Bernard, Marietta, Ga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

At his request, Mr. Bernard was cremated. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, from the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga., with military honors by the Pickens Chapter #47 DAV. Roper Funeral Home in Jasper is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Hamrick

Ruby Childers Hamrick, age 79 of Canton, Ga., passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, at her residence.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Hamrick, Canton; son, Calvin Hamrick, Canton; daughters, Rosemary Hamrick and Marie Wester, Canton,  and Sally (Michael) Owens, Fairmount; and sister, Ruthell McBee, Canton. Five grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, from Bethany Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny McPherson, Eugene Childers and Tommy Teague officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. South Canton Funeral Home & Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Jones

Ruth Moss Jones, 92, of Marietta died Friday, March 18, 2011. She is buried in Rolling Hills Memorial Gardens in Acworth.

A Pickens County native, Mrs. Jones lived in Cobb County for 45 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Jones; and her only daughter, Doris J. Martin.

She was a member of Mary’s Memorial Baptist Church in Marietta where funeral services were held. Revs. Howard DuBois, Neal McKenzie and Johnny McPherson officiated.

Survivors include her sister, Ruby M. Taylor, Marietta; brother, Leeo Moss, Talking Rock; son-in-law, James Martin, Kennesaw; two grandchildren, Sherrie M. Herron, Powder Springs, and Tim Martin, Canton; and three great-grandchildren, Valerie H. Duncan, Stephanie Herron and Ethan Herron.

Jim Hammontree

James L. (Jim) Hammontree, age 61 of Jasper, passed away suddenly Thursday, April 7, 2011, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.

Jim, a lifelong resident of Jasper, was retired from the apparel manufacturing industry and had worked for many years as a quality engineer for the Lee Company and other VF Corporation divisions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ruby Pettett Hammontree; and brother, Edsel Hammontree.

Jim is survived by his wife of 38 years, Suzanne Carney Hammontree; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Tom Garrett, Monroe; daughter, Alissa Hammontree, Atlanta; and one granddaughter, Maddie Garrett, Monroe. He was extremely proud of his daughters and adored his granddaughter. Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in-law, Geraldine and John Moody, Jasper, and Debbie and Tom Baker, Plano, Tx.; and sisters-in-law, Gilla Hammontree and Saralynn DeMarcus, both of Jasper, and Sela Hobby, Cross Hill, S.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

No services are planned at this time. Any remembrances should be made to the charity of your choice. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Kent Glancies

Mr. Kent Wesley Glancies, age 68 of Highway 136, Jasper, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011.

Mr. Glancies was born on April 10, 1942, in Wichita Falls, Ks., to John P. and Gwendolyn Stephens Glancies. He was a car salesman for Jim Tidwell Ford and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Roy Hall, Sr., Jasper; sons,  Rocky and Lonnie Glancies, both of Jasper; nine grandchildren, Justin, Jessica and Roy Hall, Jr., Shane, Nathaniel, Wesley and Tiffany Glancies and Kelsey and Dustin Cook; four great-grandchildren, Khristian Hall, Angelina Pack, Tristen Hall and Evan Glancies; and sister,  Karen Sorkin, Green Valley, Az.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Bernhardt Funeral Home Ellijay in charge of arrangements.
