Armed robbery at Crescent Bank ends in high-speed chase

4/7/2010 - Angela Reinhardt

An armed robbery at the Crescent Bank & Trust office in Marble Hill ended with a high-speed chase and speedy arrest of a Jasper man Wednesday morning.
Jacob Rey Caylor, 21, entered the Foothills bank at approximately 9:30 a.m. and walked up to the teller counter where he pulled out a small pistol, according to Pickens County Fields Operations Director Frank Reynolds.
Reynolds said the suspect was wearing a hat and sunglasses, and a shirt that was different from the garment he was wearing at the time of his apprehension.
After Caylor brandished the weapon, tellers cooperated with his request and gave the suspect approximately $3,000 in cash.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office then received the call from bank employees, who told officers Caylor was a customer of the Marble Hill branch. They were able to provide a full description of the suspect.
“Apparently he was a customer of the bank,” Reynolds said, “and had it not been for a detailed description and timely nature of the employees we would not have been able to make as quick of an arrest. The employees are to be commended.
“Why anyone would want to rob a bank you are a customer of is beyond me,” Reynolds said.
The suspect’s vehicle was later identified by deputies on Steve Tate Road near Big Canoe, Reynolds said.
"Deputy Matt Young spotted the suspect and due to his quick thinking, he called other deputies and coordinated them onto the suspect. He needs to be commended," Reynolds said.
Deputies then set up a roadblock with three patrol cars and “stop sticks” on Cove Road at the Old Burnt Mountain Road intersection.
“The suspect took a side street at the road block and that’s when the chase began,” Reynolds said.
According to Reynolds, the chase lasted approximately 10 minutes and reached speeds of up to 90 mph, stretching six or seven miles. Reynolds, who was involved in the chase, then performed a PIT maneuver, bumping the rear bumper of Caylor’s vehicle, which then flipped three times before crashing into an embankment.
“I would guess he crashed at approximately 60 mph,” Reynolds said.
Caylor sustained no injuries from the crash. He is now being held at the Pickens County Adult Detention Center.
Caylor has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, and fleeing and attempting to elude. More charges may follow. Officers confiscated over $3,000 in cash and one pistol.
Crescent Bank and Trust was also a member of the sheriff’s office Business Watch, which sends out email notifications to business in Pickens County in attempt to increase safety and communication, and Reynolds said their participation in the program was instrumental in notifying other business of the danger in a timely manner.
“Emails were immediately sent to all other businesses that were members,” Reynolds said. “This is a perfect example of how the sheriff’s office works closely with the community. The program helps us have better law enforcement.”
Pickens County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Pickens County EMS and the Jasper Police Department.
