On Sunday, Jan. 24, the Georgia Reading Association named Pickens High School senior Savanna Henderson as the 2010 High School Reader of the Year. This was the second year in a row for PHS to have the statewide winner and the third winner in five years. Savanna was nominated by PHS Media Specialist Sharon Rasco on the basis of her reading history, in terms of both numbers and variety of books read, as well as her essay entitled “What Reading Means to Me”. Savanna’s application packet, along with those of students at other grade levels in Pickens County, was then submitted to the Pickens County Reading Council who sponsored each of the entrants into the Georgia Reading Association’s statewide contest. Based on the GRA criteria for the essays, Savanna’s was chosen by the GRA Awards Selection Committee as the high school winner. GRA State President Sallie Averitt-Miller and Awards Committee Chair Stella Patrick presented Savanna with a plaque and certificate at a reception honoring winners at four grade levels - Primary, Elementary, Middle and Secondary. As part of the program, winners read their essays at the reception, which was held at the Capital Ballroom of the Sheraton Hilton Hotel in Atlanta. Those attending from Pickens County included Savanna and members of her family, PCRC President Karen Gurty, PHS Media Specialist Sharon Rasco and her husband, Glenn. Congratulations to Savanna on this impressive achievement. The Georgia Reading Association is a membership organization whose mission is promoting literacy in Georgia.
