KATIE O’SHIELDS received the first place award for her fiction essay, The Mushroom Fairy, in the Pickens County Middle School Writing Contest. The Mushroom Fairy is an exciting and compelling fable. It is a well thought out exercise in learning, loving and caring with a unique ending—a mature look through the eyes of the twelve year-old daughter of Kim and Tommy O’Shields of Jasper, Georgia. When asked if she believed in fairies, or good luck charms, she said, “No, but I believe in a Kingdom of miracles.” Rebecca Holan is the Language Arts teacher of our seventh grade fiction writer and although Katie has a passion for literature, her favorite subjects are science and social studies. They are the basis from which her imagination sprouts fiction. Katie has always had a love of the arts and does not limit herself to writing. She is an ardent reader. Her enthusiasm for music has earned her a place in the percussion section of the school band. While only in the third grade, her teacher, Kathy Cox, arranged to have her drawing of horses hung in the Department of Education in Atlanta. Katie plans on entering the Sassafras Literary Exchange writing contest again next year, and has dreams of building a career in Literature. Her seven year old sister, Emily, who also loves writing, will soon follow in Katie’s footsteps. We wish them both every success.
