Be Careful What You Wish For

6/3/2009 - Sarah Ballard

I opened my locker a little bit too hard, but I didn’t care. Could this day get any worse? First I spilled milk all over my new top at lunch. Then while coming into the classroom late, I dropped all my books and everyone stared at me and laughed. I looked around and saw people at their lockers chatting and all that stuff. Then I saw my crush, Kyle Brown, walking towards me! I quickly looked away, completely excited. Maybe he was coming to ask me out or ask me to be his date for the spring dance. I could have sworn my heart skipped a beat. I watched him out of the corner of my eye. It all happened so fast. As he came closer I turned to look at him and he walked right past me to the girl whose locker was next to mine! That girl was Brianna Jones.
Brianna Jones is a spoiled-rich girl who lives in a mansion that is 3 times larger than The White House. Her parents are billionaires and have amazing jobs. She always has the newest-coolest stuff around. She gets dropped off and picked up in a limo everyday at school. Probably every boy in the school likes her. To my friends and me, she is a complete brat who gets everything her way. I will admit that she is pretty, but that is all I’m going to say.
I pretended to be organizing my locker so I could hear what Kyle was going to say. "Hey Brianna," Kyle said with that 1 million dollar smile. "Hey," Brianna replied blushing. "Can I ask you something?" he asked. "You can ask me anything!" she gushed. A smile crept up my face; here it comes. He was probably going to ask her why she was such a brat or why she got everything her own way. At least something like that. "Um...I was wondering if you would go out with me," he said. "Sure!" she answered, really blushing. "Well I better go; here is my number, I will text you tonight." he said, also blushing. "I will have my phone on," she said pulling her iphone out of her locker.
I never heard them say good-bye; I had already grabbed my bag, slammed my locker shut and stormed off. This is the worst day ever. Seventh grade really stinks, I thought. My eyes started watering, but I wouldn’t let myself cry. Not in public at least. I walked home and went up the staircase to my room. There I jumped on my bed face down and signed. Why Brianna? Why is it always Brianna? I wanted to scream so hard.
Then just to make my day even worse my little brother, Brad, came into my room without knocking and got on my computer. "Why are you in here, don’t you have your own computer?" I said. "Yeah, but I wanted to read your email," he snickered. "Out! Get out!" I screamed. Then my mom yelled, "Be nice to each other." "I am! Brad completely barged into my room and got on my computer!" I yelled back. "Brad get out of your sister’s room and Kayla don’t even get an attitude with me." my mom said back. "Sorry mom," we both said. "Okay well lets all be cheery because it’s family game night!" she said all excited. Brad and I both groaned. Our parents always wanted family time. After today, couldn’t I just be alone for tonight? Let me see, tonight’s game will probably be charades, which means my dad will be the most embarrassing of the whole thing. "Please don’t invite the neighbors," I prayed.
Thankfully, family game night didn’t last that long. Thankfully my dad didn’t invite the neighbors over. Everyone was really tired after the week, which was probably the best part of the day. I went to my plain room and went to sit on my window seat. I looked out my window into the sky and saw the fist star. I looked at it and thought, then out loud I said quietly, "I wish I could switch lives with Brianna. Get everything I want and have Kyle as my boyfriend. I would have the cutest clothes that every girl would be jealous of me. On top of it all, I would live in a huge house with tons of rooms" I smiled to myself and stood up from my window seat. I never wished upon a star, but tonight I needed some comfort. I went to my computer and checked my messages. Then I got an IM from my friend:

Dreamer101: Did you hear about Brianna and Kyle??? 8:30
Skywriter78: Yeah, I was right there when he asked her out... 8:30
Dreamer101: Ok I juste wanted to let you know... 8:31
Skywriter78: Thanks. I have to go see you later. 8:32
Dreamer101: Me too Bye. 8:32

I checked the rest of my messages and logged off. I got in my cotton pajamas and got in to bed. Maybe tomorrow will be better. I turned off the lamp then I snorted, yeah right.
My alarm clock went off in the morning, but it didn’t sound like my usual beeping noise. Instead it was the song Just Dance by Lady Gaga. "That’s weird, I didn’t know my alarm clock could do that." I thought to myself. I then felt something silky across my eyes. It was eye mask. "Since when did I put this on last night and didn’t I put on my cotton pajamas?" I could feel silky pajamas instead of my worn out cotton ones. I sat up with my eye mask still on, "since when did I get a Temperpedic Mattress and a silky-thick comforter?" I pulled off my eye mask and fumbled for my lamp, but I couldn’t find it. I got up onto a soft shag rug and finally found a light switch. I flipped it on and gasped. This was not my room; it was Brianna’s!
"Oh My Gosh," I said out loud. Her room was huge! I’ve seen pictures of her room before, but I never knew it was this big. It was the coolest room I have ever seen. Thee was probably everything in that room; it was amazing. Then there was a knock at my door. "Ms. Jones, are you up? It’s time to do your hair for school today. Put on your clothes and come to the salon," someone said. "I will be right there," I replied. I looked around at all the cool stuff around me. Her theme colors were obviously pink, lime green, and purple. Her bed was facing out against a wall. The bed had a really cute, pink canopy. Over the bed was a sign that spelled her name. It lit up and blinked, which was really cool. She had a massive TV in her room that was larger than me!
I had realized that my wish came true. This morning I got my hair done in a salon, by a professional hair person. I went down a grand staircase and saw my now parents. "Good morning!" I said cheerfully. "Shush! Can’t you see I’m on the phone?" my "mother" snapped. "Oh sorry!" I replied. Wow, this is really weird; parents that don’t say good morning to their own daughter. I sat down at the middle of the long, huge table. All I could hear were the maids and butlers walking around and my "mother" talking on the phone. A butler came and took my order for my breakfast. When I got my food, I quickly ate it and ran up to my new room. I grabbed the iphone on my desk and put it in my cute book bag. If I have Brianna’s phone that is now mine, and have all of her things, then doesn’t it mean that I am going out with Kyle also. I hoped so.
I was called to go down to the six-car garage to go to school. My driver, Mike, opened the limo’s door and I got in. It was a really nice limo too. The seats were leather and there was cooler with drinks. There was also a plasma TV; no surprise. "Your dad said that your amusement park is almost done." Mike said as we turned out of the gate. "Amusement park?" I asked. "Yeah, the one that is being built on your property," he answered in an odd tone. "Do we own that much land?" I asked. "You own probably as much land as how big Six Flags over Georgia is," he replied. "Wow that’s a lot of land." I said, dazed. "Um, Brianna, should I take you to the hospital or do you have memory loss?" he said with a worried expression. "I’m fine. I just wanted to hear it again," I said with a smile. Mike looked better and pulled into the school parking lot. I looked and saw everyone looking at the limo. I looked at myself my mirror. I did look really pretty. I took a deep breath, thanked Mike for the ride, and got out of the limo.
People looked at me while I walked. Some people waved, and I felt famous. It was pretty cool. I walked across the lawn and saw my friends. I went over to our usual area where we hang out. "Hey!" I said. They gave me a weird look and my best friend said, "Don’t you belong over with the popular group over there?" I looked where she pointed and replied, "Oh, sorry to bother you." I turned and walked away from my now ex-friends. As I walked away I bumped into Brianna. "I need to talk to you," she snapped. "I’m sort of busy right now," I replied. "Ha! I don’t think so," she said grabbing my wrist and pulling me to a corner. "What is going on? I go to bed in my bedroom and wake up in yours. I have to walk to school and you show up in my limo. You better explain yourself right now." She demanded. "Ok, I’ll tell you, but it’s going to sound really cheesy," I said taking a deep breath. "I don’t care if it is cheesy. I just need to know what happened," she said in a softer tone. She is probably going to think that I am crazy. "Well, I have had a huge crush on Kyle, and then he asked you out right in front of me. I became really upset and I had already had a bad day. So when I went home and had to deal with my family, I went up to my room and found the first star. For the first time in a long time I wished on it. So I wished that you and I could switch lives." "Ok, so you’re saying a wish made this happen?" she said quietly. "I guess so." I replied, deep in thought. "Well I don’t know if I want to switch back. Not yet, at least," she said. I just stood there speechless.
She must have seen my shock. "Just hear me out, ok?" she said. I nodded in response. "Well, your parents actually talk to you and want to see what’s going on in your life, while my parents are always working and giving me everything I want. I have never liked being independent. I like to be and work with others. You just have a normal life where no one judges you, and you do chores. I would give anything for that." She finished. "Wow!" I said in complete shock. "So you are saying you will give up everything your parents have give and made for you? You would give up all of that? I said, still in shock. "I want to live your life for a few more days just to see then we can switch lives again when we’re ready, unless you are already to switch back," she winced when she said it. "You know what? I want to try it out to see how it all turns out. I want to try and talk to your parents. I say we do it." I said. "It’s a deal!" She smiled. I smiled back. I think I just made a new friend. Maybe.
Two weeks later we did switch back. I had a chat with Brianna’s parents and ever since they became better and more talkative parents. Not like my parents, but better. Brianna and I are complete best friends. It’s hard to separate us, we are that close. Our parents are now friends and hang out a lot. I learned in some ways that I like hanging out with my family (Sometimes). The most important thing I have learned is to be careful what you wish for. If you were wondering about Kyle and Brianna, they aren’t going out anymore. It turns out Brianna broke up with him a few hours after he asked her out because all he would talk about was himself. Anyway, we both think that Ryan Cook is really cute.
