Non-Fiction - Middle School Second Place

Basketball

5/12/2008 - By Kristen Garner

Have you ever been a state champion? Well I have. It all started when I was playing for Coach Rumble. The name of our team was the Starz. Out of all six girls on our team I was given the best offensive player award. It felt pretty good to be getting that award. I got a letter one day saying that I had made the 9/10 all-stars team. There were ten people picked to be on the team and I was one of them. I was the only one out of the Starz team picked to be on the all-stars team. Our coaches were Teresa Womack and Zack Goss. I was very excited to get out on the basketball court and start playing ball.
We started practices right away to get ready for the games. We had practice about every day of the week for at least an hour and a half. First, we had to go to play for the region championship. All of the games were being played at Fannin. Our first game was on Friday, February 20th against Bremen. We came ready to play ball and we sure did show it. We beat them 51-7. The next day we went back to Fannin to play Trion. At the end, the score came out to be 49-20.
We WON! This win put us in the championship game against Fannin. We knew that it would be a hard game. It was not as hard as we thought it would be because we won the region championship 55-26.
We could not believe we beat Fannin. We were given trophies and were named the District 5 Class "c" Champions. We had many fans come and cheer us on at our games. Some of the people that came to cheer us on were my good friends Brooke and Kristina. Also, lots of my family came to watch me play. That night will never be forgotten.
Then we went to compete for the State Championship. It was too far away to go back and forth so the team stayed at the Ramada Inn. Our first game was not until 10:00 p.m.so we just took it easy and hung out at the hotel. When it came time to play we were all too excited to be tired. We played Charlton. We had another victory of 52-30. We woke up the next morning and we were allowed to have a short swim. After that a few of us went from room to room visiting the other girls. We could not wait until game time. This game was against Villa Rica. This game was the most exciting game. The score went back and forth throughout the game. We were down by one with seconds to go and I hit a shot to put us up by one. It was enough to win the game. The final score in the game was 33-32. We were going to the championship game.
The championship game was going to be played against Putnam. This game was also really close but we were able to hang on and win the game 36-31. At the end of the game we all had a huge celebration. We all jumped for joy! At the end of the game we all got trophies. The Pickens County 2004 Mite Girls 9/10 All-Stars team became STATE CHAMPIONS! My whole family was there to cheer us on throughout the whole thing. Some of my friends also came to cheer us on through all of the games. They were a big support.
After the game we went to Zaxby's. When we got there it was late and they had already closed for the night, but they were nice and stayed open for us. We were promised that if we won we would get a ride in a limo. They kept there promise and we got to ride around through Helen and Cleveland. It was a great night and we will never forget it.
