Shooting the Breeze with Dawn Hause

Hause is the owner of downtown’s The Carriage House.

She will mark her 11th year in business this month.
shooting-dawn-hauseHow did The Carriage House get started?

I was the newest employee at The Carriage House 11 years ago, when I bought it from the original owners. I loved the people, the atmosphere and the hours still allowed me to be a mom. It is hard to believe it was 11 years ago.

What’s the best part of owning a local business?

The best part of owning the restaurant is most certainly the people and relationships that have been cultivated, both customers and employees. Many of our customers are now friends with other customers since meeting here. Several people have referred to it as a micro community.

What are some of the biggest challenges?

The biggest challenge is trying to change with the times.  I’m not a big “change” person, so that is particularly hard for me.   When we changed our lunch menu recently I called on my good friend Mike of Dough Boys. He helped me to fix our menu, in short order, and the finished product is fabulous.  So now you can come try what I’m being told is the best fresh burger in town, or a Pimento Cheese Sandwich either grilled or cold!

What's your favorite food to eat? To cook?

I don’t know that I have a particular favorite food, but I do enjoy serving something to make someone happy.  Even at home with dinner, nothing makes me smile more than my husband telling me that meal was delicious! (Guess that’s why I own a restaurant)

The Carriage House is open early for breakfast six days a week. What's your guilty pleasure on a day when you get to sleep in?

My day off?  It begins with a Bloody Mary and relaxing day working around the house, but not too hard.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what would you want with you?

If I was stranded on an island, just give me my husband George! I know it sounds hokey but that’s what I want. And maybe a little sunblock.

Do you have any favorite stories from your work life?

Favorite work stories? There are way too many, but some of the great memories are Reverend Walker coming in once or twice a day! The stories he would tell were always amazing. As far as our staff is concerned we love having fun and cutting up with each other. But my favorite thing is the way our customers always seem to have the right words to say when we, as individual people, have a life question. My customers have helped me send my child off to college, tell me it’s ok when he came home without a degree, held my hand through the divorce, and celebrated as I met and married my new husband.  What a work environment!

Do you binge watch any shows on Netflix?

Brothers and Sisters was my sinful pleasure! So complicated and funny at the same time.

What do you do for fun?

Entertain. I love having people over and cooking out and spending time with people I enjoy and love.
