Mail Carriers will pick up food for local food pantry Saturday

Postmaster Rick Ballew, Mail Carrier James Cox and Larry Starr from CARES display the bags that will be handed out to customers this week and can be returned Saturday to postal employees on their routes.

Mail carriers throughout Pickens County will distribute bags this week that customers may fill with canned or dry goods and leave in their mailbox May 10 for pickup.

Postal workers will leave the bags in mailboxes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and retrieve the bags on Saturday (in year’s past many have come back on Friday as well).
Last year, the postal employee collected 8,000 pounds of food for CARES during the one-day drive.
Larry Starr, the director at CARES, stressed that all food donated will go to local people. “None of it is sent out of the area,” he said.
Starr said the need in Pickens has been constant, with them serving about 200 families a week. He said the need had been growing for many years before leveling off at 200 families (or he estimates 500 people) who depend on CARES for basic nutrition.
