Pickens County Georgia, February 6, 2014: On Wednesday, February 5th, at approximately 5 p.m., the Pickens Sheriff’s Office responded to the Pickens High School regarding a possible sexual assault. Deputies arrived and learned a 15-year-old PHS student had informed a teacher she had been assaulted at the school. The teacher quickly alerted school administrators and school resource officers of the incident.
Pickens Sheriff’s Office detectives worked alongside the Georgia Bureau of Investigation through the night to determine and verify the reported information.
During the investigation, it was determined that the event occurred on school property but after school hours. Their investigation led to the arrest of Miguel Chavez Cano, 18 year old PHS Student, charged with Statutory Rape. Mr. Chavez Cano was also a PHS student.
Investigators were able to quickly identify the suspect in this case and verified there was not a predator or stranger involved. The crime of Statutory Rape, according to Georgia Law, occurs when intercourse takes place with any person under the age of 16. Due to the age of the victim and Mr. Chavez Cano, he has been charged accordingly.
Mr. Canon Cano is currently in custody at the Pickens Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center with no bond at this time. A first appearance hearing will be required by the Magistrate Court of Pickens County to establish bond. The investigation is still in progress and additional charges may be sought.
Statement from School Superintendent Lula Mae Perry: Pickens High School has been made aware of a possible sexual assault between a male student and a female student which occurred on school property after school hours. The Pickens County School District will not tolerate actions of this type and will continue to both enforce and communicate this message to our students. The GBI and the Sheriff’s Office have been working together on this investigation and have made an arrest.
