Christmas parades this weekend

Seasonal celebrations in Ball Ground, Jasper, rain-or-shine

City of Jasper employees prune the trees on Main Street then put Christmas lights up ahead of festivities this weekend.

“Bundle up and come on out,” said Jasper Merchants Association President Nancy Watkins on the 7th annual Night of Lights Parade Saturday, Dec. 7 in Jasper. Ball Ground is also taking a show-must-go-on attitude for their Christmas Parade, Friday night beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Spokespeople for both events said they will be held rain or shine. Weekend forecasts call for a 50-60 percent chance of rain with temperatures expected to be in the mid-40s for the evening events.
Ball Ground may move some after-parade activities indoors if the weather is too foul.
“The events after the parade (Officer Don, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and donations for Toys for Tots) may be moved to the Ball Ground Community Center if it comes a downpour.  We will announce a final decision around 2 p.m. on Friday on our Facebook events page and on WLJA  Radio,” according to an e-mail from organizer Tim Cavender. See complete story on the Ball Ground events on page 12A.
The Saturday Jasper events  and entertainment along Main Street begin at 3 p.m. and includes the county tree lighting at the courthouse. The parade with Grand Marshall Brian Rittenberry, former American Idol Contestant, is set for 6 p.m. See ad on page 8A for details.
Watkins said more than 40 floats are anticipated for the parade, with six to eight vendors on Main Street. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s a great way to start off the holiday.”
There are no backup plans for rain in Jasper but there are awnings for parade watchers to stand under along Main Street and plenty of vendors selling hot drinks. Restaurants in downtown will also be open with holiday specials.
