Senior QB Tanner Brumby picks up some yards in the NW Whitfield season finale.

For Brumby and 12 other seniors this would be their final game as a PHS Dragon.

The Dragons football season ended last Friday night at the hands of Northwest Whitfield. This was the second meeting between the two teams this year. Pickens traveled to Northwest in week two of the season for their first region cross-over contest. That game was won by the Bruins 25-13.

Friday night’s game was for a birth in the state AAAA play-offs. Region 7-AAAA reserves the last regular season game for cross-over match ups pitting the two top teams in both sub-regions together for the championship game. The 2 seeds play the 3 seeds to determine which other two teams will represent the region in the state playoffs. Northwest finished the season as the 2-seed while the Dragons were the 3-seed.
The game would begin as a defensive struggle for both teams. Neither team could establish much on offense throughout the entire first quarter. Pickens would put the first points on the board however with a well-executed 7-play drive that would end with a 10 yard run by Shannon Brooks for a touchdown; and the Dragons were on top 7-0. The lead would hold as the defense would take advantage of a 4th down mistake by the Bruins to give the Dragons the ball and another opportunity to put points on the board.
Pickens would play ball-control on their next drive eating up the remaining 1st quarter with the ball, but would ultimately stall out on the Bruins 15 yard line as a 4th down pass sailed over the receiver’s head.
Northwest would finally capitalize on their next drive, with a 35 yard field goal. They would add another 3-points to their total on their next possession to cut the Dragon’s lead down to one; 7-6. Late in the first half, the Bruins would fumble the ball deep in their own territory to give Pickens one last chance at points before the half, but the Dragons were unable to capitalize.
The week before, the Dragons would find themselves in a similar situation at River Ridge. Up 7-6 at the half, Pickens would put on a 2nd half offensive performance to score 36 points and to take the victory overwhelmingly over the Knights. Friday nights game would see the same thing, but it was Northwest that would provide the 2nd half fireworks this time.
Northwest would come out of the locker-room and immediately begin to attack the Dragon’s defense through the air; biting off chunks of yards. The Bruin defense would also play well, creating a sense of frustration for the Dragons. Shannon Brooks would find the end zone once more, along with Tanner Brumby on an option play to give the Dragons 21 points for the game, but the Bruins would rack up 33 second-half points of their own to add to the 6 scored before halftime. In the end, Northwest would hand Pickens their 2nd lose of the year 39-21.
More records fell Friday however as Shannon Brooks tied the record for points scored in a season and for touchdowns in a season. He also added to his single season rushing record and ended the year with 1, 696 rushing yards. The total points scored by a Pickens team was also broken as the Dragons scored 303 points this season. Thomas Howard also broke the single-season tackling record with 169 total tackles this season.
For the game itself, QB Tanner Brumby threw for 29 yards and rushed for 40. Shannon Brooks ran the ball for 167 yards. Marcus Byrd led the receivers with 17 yards. On defense, Thomas Howard recorded 14 tackles. Clay Lawson had an interception, and Ty Prather recovered a fumble.
