PHS hosts Region XC Championships Fri. at Roper Park

The PHS Girls’ Varsity squad gets off to a fast start in an earlier meet this season. The PHS Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity squads will square off against the 10 other Region 7AAAA teams in the Region Championships at Roper Park on Friday 11/1. The race schedule for Friday is as follows: Boys’ Varsity – 4:30 PM, Girls’ Varsity -5:00 PM, and Girls’ / Boys’ JV (combined) at 5:30 PM. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for students / children.

Collectively this season’s PHS Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams have looked to be the strongest in school history. Both teams have been ranked in the Top 10 in the AJC and GA Milesplit polls for 4A all season and have taken home many medals and trophies from regular season meets.  That is all history now though, as the Dragons and Lady Dragons will have to do it for real when it counts in this Friday’s Region 7AAAA Championships which PHS will host at Roper Park.

Prior results won’t count as the top 4 teams and the top 6 individuals in Friday’s Varsity Races will qualify for the GHSA State Meet in Carrollton on 11/9. This year’s Dragons appear to be going into Friday’s Region Championship as the favorite. The PHS Girls’ Varsity look like they will be in a shoot-out with region favorite Heritage-Catoosa for the win.

PHS’ Sean Parker appears to have a good shot at the individual title but could be challenged by teammates Turner Moranos and Wyatt Ingram among others. For the girls, Alyssa Weaver appears to be the individual favorite Friday with likely challenges from several Heritage-Catoosa girls. Other Region 7AAAA teams competing Friday in addition to Pickens and Heritage will be Cass, Cedartown, Dalton, Gilmer, LaFayette, Ridgeland, River Ridge, Northwest Whitfield, Southeast Whitfield,

Friday’s race schedule is as follows:  4:30 PM – Boys’ Varsity, 5:00 PM – Girls’ Varsity, and 5:30 PM – Combined Girls’ and Boys’ JV. Competing for PHS in the Boys’ Varsity Race will be Sean Parker, Turner Moranos, Wyatt Ingram, Tyler Ledford, Gabe Spedale, Chandler Greene, and Levi Bruce.  The PHS Girls’ Varsity will include Alyssa Weaver, Savanah Rice, Sarah Ballard, Savannah Miller, Amy Miranda, Jessie Clary, and Lauren Skibba.

In the event of seriously inclement weather, the rain date for the meet is Saturday 11/2. Admission to Friday’s meet is $3 for adults, and $1 for students and children. Come out and make some noise for the home teams and help the PHS XC squads make it to State.
