School enrollment down slightly from last year

Tate Elementary still below desired student numbers

Pickens schools saw 4,311 students enrolled the second day of classes, a total student population down 50 from last year at the same point. First day numbers had been lower but some of that could be attributed to the rains and flooding.

The school board also discussed facility plans, recognized students and heard about efforts to shift enrollment to Tate during their August meeting.

Looking at the numbers, we should consider consolidating and closing a couple of schools. For both efficiency and budget. Then I would have planned for that 5 years ago for the current SPLOST. This is not a sudden event.

But which schools would we close? That idea, while more efficient, makes the kids have to commute too far. I would advocate for more smaller schools without vice principals and some consolidating programs like PE, art, even food services into a central location -- then delivering out.

Pickens County is NOT Cherokee or Cobb or that maze of Fulton. The two schools I would close are Jasper Middle and Tate. The Tate relocate would be about 7 or 8 miles to Harmony, and Jasper to Pickens about 4 miles going the back way. I'm not against small schools, I went to them myself. but there's a bigger need for tax dollar efficacy, and not spend proposed remodeling money on campuses with limited life spans.

I think we should keep the two middle schools just as it is, but I think we should consolidate an elementary school. Or at least redistrict the area again to where it can even it out.

I suggest children attend the schools that are in their own school district. With very few exceptions for waivers to other elementary schools. I thought the whole idea behind the redistricting was to rebalance the student to teacher ratio's in each of these schools. Instead all parents were given the choice to transport their children to the school of their choice. Most parents opted for the newer school resulting in low student enrollment at Tate.

School choice was passed by the state. Thank goodness. I should have the option to take my kid to the best school in the county. I pay the taxes. Plus it saves on bussing. They only bus in district.
