“Bring One for the Chipper 2012” Christmas Tree Recycling Event

chippergraphic

Keep Pickens Beautiful reminds you to “Bring One for the Chipper” and recycle your Christmas tree. Your old tree will be reused as mulch or wildlife habitat. Drop off your undecorated Christmas tree for recycling at the Park’n Ride across from the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce Building in Newton Park (500 Stegall Street), Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

This event allows our county residents to put discarded Christmas trees to a good use.  It also assists local governments in complying with Georgia’s yard trimmings ban implemented in September 1996. The ban prohibits the disposal of yard trimmings in municipal solid waste landfills. Last year more than 200,300 trees were collected and recycled into mulch for playgrounds, city and county landscaping projects and individual homes. More than 8,500 of these trees were sunk into lakes across the state to provide fish habitats. Over 4.8 million Christmas trees have been recycled and diverted from landfills since that start of this statewide program in 1991.
