A mean, green, edible gardening machine

?

ediblejasperFrom age three to  retirement age and everywhere in between, Sustainable Pickens saw its largest group of participants yet at their most recent get-your-hands-dirty project.

Last Wednesday, Sept. 14, over 15 people geared up to play in the dirt as downtown Jasper’s edible gardens underwent expansion.

The edible gardening initiative, called Edible Jasper, is a collaborative effort between several local groups looking to landscape downtown Jasper with edible, medicinal or native plants. Edible Jasper is one of the pilot projects of Sustainable Pickens, which was formed in 2010.

Edible Jasper’s first garden plot was planted in the spring of last year, beginning as a scraggly bed under one of the lampposts in the parking lot next to the Pickens County Progress building. Just one year later the garden has survived one drought and two weed whippings by community service workers, and organizers say it is thriving.

For this most recent expansion, participants layered newsprint, leaves, mulch and soil at two other light posts in the Progress parking lot in preparation for more edible or otherwise useful plants to be introduced in the coming weeks.             Thanks to Pickens County Master Gardener Darla Huffman, two blueberry bushes were planted in one of the light posts during this expansion.

Sustainable Pickens would like to thank Southscape and Amicalola EMC for their support.

Plans are to complete the third light post bed in the coming weeks, but no date has been set.
