Submitted article

The 2011 edition of the Pickens High School football season will kick off this Thursday, August 18, at Pickens High Stadium with a scrimmage game against West Hall starting at 7 p.m. The Dragons just completed two weekend mini-camps as well as summer workouts. The Dragons will be a fairly young squad this year with only six seniors on the roster. They include Matt Stracener, Corey Evans, D.J. Williams, Ryan Neill, Jake Ledbetter and John Burmeister. Both offense and defense will have four returning starters, and with only six seniors, the Dragons will rely heavily on their underclassmen.

Entering his 19th year as the head coach for the Dragons is Steve Sewell who is excited about the upcoming season, stating, “We have had a very good off-season; the kids have worked hard and we are excited about the upcoming season.”

Above, Tanner Brumby (red jersey) will be leading the 2011 Dragon offense as the starting QB.

Joining Coach Sewell on his staff will be Sam Wigington who enters his 12th season as offensive line coach, and defensive coordinator Duane Cronic in his 8th year with the Dragons. Coaching the defensive line for his 6th season will be Joseph Mullins. Rounding off the defensive staff will be Adam Wharton at linebackers and Daniel Culbreth at the secondary position. On offense, Michael Bail will head up the quarterbacks and running backs duty, while Stephen Hunter will lead the wide receiver group.

On offense, the Dragons will be led by sophomore Tanner Brumby at quarterback. Tanner takes over for Jordan Shaw who is currently playing for the Shorter College Hawks. The backs will be filled by Justin Hamrick, Shannon Brooks, Eric Collins, Kalyn Brooks, Titus Jones and Jake Coleman. Starting on offensive line will be Corey Evans at center, Tyler Harrington and Tatem Dean at the guards. The offensive tackles will be Taylor Logan and Randall Wilkins. The tight end position will be filled by Matt Stracener and David Culbreth. Wide receivers for the Dragons include Ryan Neill, Titus Henderson, Jake Ledbetter, Jake Dean, Tate Rizoti and Eric Justice.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Dragons will be led up front by Will Elrod and Cody Childers at the defensive tackles.  Matt Stracener will handle the strong side DE position, while the back side end will be played by John Burmeister and Titus Jones. Zach McCoy, Thomas Howard, Titus Henderson and Clay Lawson will hold down the four linebacker positions. In the secondary the dragons will have Tate Rizoti, Ryan Neill, Eric Justice, Jake Dean and Jake Coleman rotating in at each position.

Kicking duties for the Dragons will be handled by Titus Henderson and Miguel Chavez, while punting duties will be given to Tanner Brumby.

The coaching staff and players encourage everyone to come out and support the PHS football team this Thursday Night at 7.

FC...might want to double check your number of coaches comparing us against universities!! All of our coaches also teach so what's the big deal and almost all of them coach another sport? What they get paid for coaching will never equal or come close to the time they spend helping our kids and that includes the band staff, cheerlading, drama staff and so on. If you're basing it off of the folks on the sideline friday nights we probably have more volunteers than coaches.....doc tors, equipment guys, ball boys and etc..

The Dragons take on a 4 and 1 cedartown team. My advice to the coaches would be ball control so maybe the game could be close. Looks like cedartown will win big.

Dragons a three AAA team just lost to the Fannin Rebels who are a two AA team... 21-0... Need a new coach.

ok obviously this kid doesn't know what he is talking about because the score wasn't 21-0 it was 28-29 and the game was lost in the last second on a dumb call in which the refs put one second back on the clock
