A scene from Main Street earlier today.
Pickens Fire Chief Bob Howard reported at noon that within the last hour, the roads here “have gone totally to – well – totally to hell.”
“There are too many vehicles still out here creating problems,” Howard said of the icy conditions. “We already have all the wrecks we can handle.”
Howard said the whole county is equally bad with a lot of wrecks being reported on Highway 515. County crews are also tied up with a wreck in the Henderson Mountain area where they had to walk in equipment due to slick conditions that have prevented them from reaching a wreck with injuries with their vehicles. They have since removed the injured parties.
Howard said for people still at work, he would advise them to try and get somewhere safe as soon as possible. But noted that “it’s a crap shoot” as whether this afternoon with see improvement or worsening of driving conditions.
Howard was clear and emphatic that after dark, with temperatures in the teens, it will definitely be worse.
Howard said the main roads that have been treated are the best but even there, slick patches should be expected.
