My name is Daniel Bell and I am a candidate for the Pickens County Post 2 Board of Education seat in the May 20, 2014, Republican Primary.
I was born and raised in Pickens County. I graduated from Pickens High School and Pickens Technical School in 1988 as a dual-enrolled student where I studied Auto Collision Repair. I later went back and received a degree in Technical Studies.
I worked almost 10 years with Bill Elliott Racing in Dawsonville where I helped build and paint race cars. I then worked with Ronnie Thompson Ford for six years in management positions. I am currently employed at Chattahoochee Technical College as the Auto Collision Repair instructor and have been there seven years.
I have been married for 20 years to Christi who works for Georgia Mountains Hospice in Jasper and I also volunteer for Georgia Mountain Hospice. We have two children in the Pickens County School System.
My wife and I are members of Ball Creek Baptist Church, where I serve as a Deacon.
At the birth of our first child, my wife Christi and I decided that it would be best for our children if she could stay home with them to begin their education before entering kindergarten. We were not in a financial state to make this an easy decision, so we basically changed our lifestyle and sold things that were not necessary to survive and made this happen. After our children entered into the Pickens County School System we remained very active in our children’s education. We feel very blessed to live in a community in which the teachers provide such a welcome open door policy. If elected, I would work to provide the teachers with all the support needed to provide my children, your children and your grandchildren the best possible education.
Another area of our school system that greatly concerns me is the lack of students receiving technical education while in high school. I, as well as a large number of my classmates, attended Pickens Technical Institute while sophomores and juniors as dual enrolled students. This allowed us to attend Pickens Tech full time as seniors and receive a diploma from each school the same year. This “dual enrollment” system is available today and is designed in different variations to jump start a student’s career by allowing eligible students the ability to receive technical college credit or four year college credit while still in high school. A trained local workforce would be an attractor to business and industry. I would work from a local level as well as a state level to increase the participation into these programs that our community so desperately needs.
To all stakeholders of Pickens County, your names appear on the top of the organizational structure of the Pickens County School System. Without you, there would not be a school system. It is critical that all stakeholders have a direct line of communication with each one in the school system. I would work with the developers of the Pickens County School’s Comprehensive Communication Plan to monitor its effectiveness and adjust accordingly.
A seat on the school board is a very important position, not only in the school system, but in the county as well. I seek no personal gain or recognition if I obtain this position. My goal is to help improve Pickens County Schools. I need your support in the Republican Primary May 20 and I need your prayers daily.
