Ms. Betty Jean Cantrell, age 74 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 at The Terrace at Riverstone in Canton, Ga. following a period of declining health.
Born July 17, 1934 in Pickens County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Edward, Sr. and Carrie Estelle Holcomb Roper. She had worked as a cook at Pickens County High School.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Gary Harben, Dawsonville, Ga., and Tammy and Allen Walker, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Joyce Cantrell and Michael and Shelley Cantrell, all of Jasper; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and sisters and brother-in-law, Marjorie Bruce, Jasper, and Judy and Glen Cheshire, Ball Ground, Ga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ray Mauldin and Gary Parker officiating. Interment followed in Yellow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Lamar and Doug Bruce, Randall, Tommy, Timmy and Jerry Roper, Jackie and Jimmy Cheshire and Tony Fountain.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the ?special care? shown to their mother during her stay at The Terrace at Riverstone and to Crossroads Hospice.
Mrs. Evvie Pettett Chastain, age 86 of Ball Ground, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008 at Northside-Cherokee Hospital.
Mrs. Chastain was a retired seamstress and member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Melvin Chastain, Waleska, and Hollis Chastain, Ball Ground; and daughter, Evelyn Angel, Fairmount. Fourteen grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Gene Childers and Gene Tatum officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Stella Fox Grizzle, age 85 of Ball Ground, passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at Well Star Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Janet Lively, Duluth, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Bobby James, Marietta; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Marie Fox, Ball Ground. Ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Alton Burrell officiating. Interment was in Ball Ground City Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Aaron Artrip, Brian Fox, Jerry Lively, Jr., Josh Lively, Scott Henson and Bret Manross.
Mr. Hoyle H. Herndon, age 69 of the Long Swamp Community, passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 11, 2008 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton.
Mr. Herndon was a member of Four Mile Baptist Church, a veteran of the US Army and had worked several years for the Georgia Marble Company as a mill operator.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Causby Herndon, Jasper; son, Buster Herndon, Marble Hill; daughter, Becky Herndon Mosher, Nelson; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Mims Herndon and Danny Herndon, all of Calhoun, and Edward Herndon, Ellijay; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna Satterfield, Shirley and J.B. Kirby and Bennie and Arnold Bell, all of Calhoun, and Linda and Lonnie Mabry, Canton. Five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Herndon was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Neomi Herndon; brother, Donnie Herndon; and sister, Bernice Payne.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Danny Baker and Barry Payne officiating. Interment was in Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Curtis Roland, Scott Lawson, Josh Herndon, Dylan, Devin and Cody Payne.
Mr. Robert L. Turner, age 77, passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 12, 2008 at Well Star Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Turner, Tate; sister, Catherine Adams, Canton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Helen Turner, Kathryn Turner, Doris and Emory Turner and Judy and James Hugh Bryan, all of Jasper. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Grant Wade officiating. Interment was in Free Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Turner, Mike McArthur, Jeff and Jamie Bryan, Brock Turner and Ben Daniels. Honorary pallbearers were: Roger Rich and Johnny Arrendale. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to Free Hope Baptist Church.
Mrs. Marjorie L. Bruce, age 80 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2008 at her residence.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Lamar and Debbie Bruce and Doug and Becky Bruce, all of Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and James Ray and Barbara and Alan Jones, all of Jasper; and sister, Judy Cheshire, Ball Ground. Fourteen grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Hazelle H. Rottman, age 80 of Bent Tree, Jasper, Ga., passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, (Bud) Eli F. Rottman, Bent Tree; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Kim Rottman and Ron and Cathy Rottman, all of Omaha, Ne.; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Tom Bielewicz, Omaha, Ne.; and sister, Ruth Jewell, Lincoln, Ne. Several grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. from New Lebanon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ben Laughlin officiating. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Tommy Kay, age 80 of Fairmount, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 at Gordon Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Kay was born in Gordon County on June 19, 1928, the son of the late Charlie and Rosie Silvers Kay. He was retired from the textile industry and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.
Survivors include his nephew and wife, John and Faye Addy, Concord Community; sister-in-law, Mittie Kelley; and a niece, Susie Grizzle. Other relatives survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Freeman Hamrick officiating. Interment was in the family lot of Pleasant Grove (Ryo) Baptist Church Cemetery. Music was arranged by Tara Smith, Wesley Grizzle and Lisa and Drew Kirby. Pallbearers were: Darrell and Wesley Grizzle, Mike Farmer, Elbert Jackson and Michael Johnson.
Mrs. Ruth J. Slaughter, age 85 of Jasper, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 10, 2008 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Mrs. Slaughter was born in Hamilton County, Tn. and lived much of her life in the Duvall County area of Florida. She finally moved and retired to the Jasper area.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, LaGuana and Ken Godfrey, Ellijay, Lee Slaughter-Shy and Ron Shy, Las Vegas, Nv., and Rosemary and A.J. Padgett, Jasper; sisters and brother-in-law, Betty Oakes, Chattanooga, Tn., and Naomi and Mason Oakes, Greensboro, N.C.; and grandchildren, Matthew Godfrey, Amy Slaughter, Alan Padgett and Ann Blackwell. Several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Slaughter was preceded in death by her husband, Edward K. Slaughter; son, Ralph Edward Slaughter; and granddaughter, Lori Ann Sheffield.
The funeral service was held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Stover and Matthew E. Godfrey officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Alan Padgett, J.T. and Jacob Bozeman, C.W. Brock, Eddy Rogers and Jack McEntire. A.J. Padgett was an honorary pallbearer.
Mr. Mark Childers, age 48 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at his residence.
Survivors include his mother, Louise Childers, Jasper; sons, Tony and Blake Childers, both of Jasper; daughter, Niki Childers, Waleska; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Junior Westbrook, Flowery Branch, and Jordan and Cody Marchman, Canton. Mr. Childers was preceded in death by his father, Victor Childers.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Sam Harbin and Leroy Kelley officiating. Interment was in Georgia National Cemetery near Canton with local Chapter 47 DAV in charge of graveside rites. Pallbearers were: Cody Marchman, Junior and Adam Westbrook, Russell Burger, Andrew Monroe and Alan Bastanpour.
