Earnest (Jerry) Zeller
The Venerable Doctor Earnest Jerome (Jerry) Zeller passed away on Friday, July 4, 2008 after a long illness.
Dr. Zeller was a well-known educator, Episcopal priest and writer. He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1925. He earned his undergraduate degree and two Masters degrees from Emory University and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. Dr. Zeller was a retired full university professor, having served as a College and University Dean of Emory University; occasional chair of the divisions of Behavioral and Social Sciences and of Education at Mercer University, Atlanta; and most recently Vice President and Dean and Professor at Reinhardt College in Waleska. He was named a Danforth Associate for his excellence in teaching and was a Fulbright Scholar in Egypt.
Dr. Zeller was ordained into the Episcopal priesthood in 1954 and served as rector, vicar or assistant in parishes in the dioceses of Florida and Atlanta for 50 years. He was appointed Archdeacon for the Episcopal Church?s Diocese of Atlanta in 1993. He was serving as Rector of Holy Family Episcopal Church in Jasper when he retired from the priesthood in 2003. Dr. Zeller published numerous poems, essays and short stories and was-a charter member and past president of the Georgia State Poetry Society. He was a combat veteran of WW II and a retired reserve chaplain (Capt.) in the United States Army.
Dr. Zeller is survived by his wife, Patricia Baker Zeller, Decatur; two daughters, Carol Gay Hall, Oakridge, Tn., and Donna Sue Casey, Columbia, S.Ca.; his son, Earnest Jerome, Jr. (Chip), Dacula; two step-children, Warren Turner Jackson, III, Grapevine, Tx., and Lore Ann Jackson Lee, Decatur; ten grandchildren; his brother, James John Zeller, Winterhaven, Fl.; and one niece and two nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, July 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew?s Episcopal Church. The family will receive visitors at A.S. Ansel Edmund ?Stoney? Jackson, age 92 of Big Canoe and formerly of Perry, Ga. from 1954 to 2006, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Morning Pointe Assisted Living Facility in Calhoun, Ga.
Born Oct. 30, 1915 in Dexter, Ma., he was the son of the late Albert W. and Isabell Paulin White Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a captain in the US Army stationed in the Philippines during WW II. From 1951-1979 he worked as a civilian in the personnel office at Robbins Air Force Base in Warner Robbins, Ga. Mr. Jackson was a lifelong member of the Perry Country Club and served as a Little League coach in Perry for five years. He was a member of Alcoholic Anonymous for 25 years and also a member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church.
Mr. Jackson married Dally Jones of Pineville, Ga. on August 14, 1943. The couple had one son, Robert Albert Jackson. Dally preceded Mr. Jackson in death in October 1972. He married Hazel Hathaway of Perry on Nov. 1973. Hazel preceded him in death in October 1999.
Survivors include his son, Robert A. Jackson, Big Canoe, Ga.; grandsons, Andrew Scott Jackson, Meridian, Ms., and Matthew Robert Jackson, Fayetteville, N.C.; great-grandson, Andrew Scott Jackson, Jr., Meridian; sister, Ruth Ziehler, Feeding Hill, Ma.; and brother, Donald Jackson, Brocton, Ma.
A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 1 from the Perry Memorial Gardens in Perry, with Father Frank Richardson officiating. The family requests donations be sent to the American Diabetes Association. Roper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth ?Allen? Bartley Anderson, age 60 of Big Canoe, Ga., died Friday, June 27, 2008 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton, Ga. following a sudden illness.
Born March 21, 1948 in Yokohama, Japan, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Elizabeth Anthony Bartley. She was a teacher and a homemaker. Mrs. Anderson was a member of Holy Family Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Phil Anderson, Big Canoe; daughter, Sara Anderson Petren, Macon, Ga.; sisters, Ann Bartley Pinner, Suffolk, Va., and Katie Bartley Hawkins, Paris, France; brother, Barry James Bartley, Herndon, Va. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives survive.
At her request, Mrs. Anderson was cremated and a memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2 at the Holy Family Episcopal Church with Mother Mary Johnson officiating. Retired U.S. Navy Captain Phillips Argrove Ammons, age 76, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 in his home on Burnt Mountain in Jasper, Ga.
Born Oct. 11, 1931 in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of the late Phillips Argrove Ammons, Sr. and Maggie Perry Ammons. Captain Ammons had served his country as a Naval officer for 28 years. He was a pilot in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and has had command tours throughout the world. Additionally, he has served his Jasper United Methodist Church (JUMC) for 22 years.
Survivors include his wife, Judith Jensen Ammons, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Douglass Phillips and Kristin Williams Ammons, Millington, Tn.; and granddaughters, Katelyn Elizabeth and Ellery Reid Ammons.
At his request, Captain Ammons was cremated and a memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6 from Jasper United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jerry Peele and Hoyt Jenkins officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Jasper DAV. Interment of the cremains will follow at a later date in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond, Va. Mr. Lee Causey, age 23 of Jasper, passed away suddenly in Atlanta on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 as the result of an auto accident.
Survivors include his wife, Ashley Causey, Jasper; mother and step-father, Cindy and Alan Timms, Jasper; father, Johnny Causey, Jasper; mother- and father-in-law, Eddie and Linda Davis; grandfather, Herman Hollingshead, Sr., Jasper; son, Master Levi Causey, Jasper; brother and family, Ralph Causey, Jasper; step-brother, Shawn Lawson, Canton. Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Causey was preceded in death by a grandfather, J.R. Causey; and grandmothers, Judy Hollingshead and Maybelle Causey.

Mrs. Joan Young, age 65 of Jasper, Ga. (Bent Tree Community), passed last Friday afternoon, June 27, 2008 at her residence.
Surviving are the husband, John Young, Bent Tree; son and daughter-in-law, David and Penny Young, Tiger, Ga.; daughters and son-in-law, Tracey and Jacques Sorci, New Rochelle, N.Y., and Jennifer and Susan Young, Los Angeles, Ca.; brother, Paul McIlvried, Canada; and grandchildren, Thibaud, Julien and Emilia Sorci.

Mr. Floyd E. Blackwell, age 70 of Ball Ground, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee.
Mr. Blackwell was retired from the Fulton Co. Board of Education and was a member of Yellow Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Blackwell; and brother, Donas Blackwell.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Blackwell, Ball Ground; son, Jeff Blackwell, Ball Ground; brother, W.M. Blackwell, Jasper; sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta (Eddie) Brackett, Doris (Ollie) Holden, Selma (Jimmy) Dobson and Carolyn (Gene) Hyde, all of Ball Ground; and grandsons, Holden and Chris Blackwell. Mr. Leon Grizzle, age 72 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and June Grizzle, Jasper; daughters and son-in-law, Sandy Hollifield, Jasper, and Pam and Damon Boling, Calhoun; brothers and sisters-in-law, J.C. and Jean Grizzle, Snellville, and Bob and Alice Grizzle, Ellijay; sister-in-law, Jeanette Grizzle, Jasper; grandchildren, Haley Grizzle, Jeffery Hollifield and Jessica and Ethan Boling; and step-grandson, Shane Stone.
Mr. Grizzle was preceded in death by his wife, Dot Grizzle; son, Chad Grizzle; brother, Donald Grizzle; sister, Hulda Stanfield; and parents, Willis and Ida Grizzle.

Mrs. Margaret Weirbach, age 97 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 2, 2008 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Jack Milko, Jasper; brother, James Huhn, Wichita, Ks.; grandsons, Michael and Nancy Milko, Ellijay, and John and Kelly Milko, Edison, N.J.; granddaughters, Erikalyn, Jacksonville, Fl., Ashely, Indiana, and Justine, Georgia; and great-granddaughter, Madison.

Mr. Grady Fay Pierce, age 77 of Tate, Ga., passed at his residence Monday evening, June 30, 2008.
Survivors include his son, Jimmy Pierce, Savannah; step-son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Vivian Murphy, Ball Ground; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Tony Wilson, Griffin; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Allen Ray, Canton, and Bobbie Jo and Mike Whittington, Watkinsville, Ga.; sisters, Patsy Harper and Joyce Lewis, Griffin. Ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.

Helen Strickland Lanning, age 66 of Tate, formerly of Canton, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee.
Ms. Lanning was a beautician, a Past Matron of Cherokee Chapter Order of Eastern Star and member of Oakdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Vernie Charles Lanning, Tate; daughters, Jean McPherson, Waleska, and Kirstie Hornsby, Jasper; mother, Mattie Strickland, Canton; brothers, Jerry Strickland, Canton, and Tim Strickland, Ball Ground; sisters, Margaret Weaver, Monroe, and Barbara Lowery, Canton. Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday, June 30 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with the Revs. Franklin and Philip McPherson officiating. Interment followed in Turniptown Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellijay.
Mrs. Shirley Sanford, age 59 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008.
Survivors include her sons, Bobby Murphy, Canton; Michael Combs, Blue Ridge, and E.J. Hire, Tennessee; daughter, Patricia Murphy, Dallas, Ga.; brothers, Ricky Godfrey and Edgar Humphries, both of Canton, and David Godfrey, Jasper; sisters, Jackie Cohaley, Canton, Janie Goss and Brenda Carters, both of Blue Ridge, Debbie Goss, Talking Rock, and Beverly Roland, Newell, W.V. Nine grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Dennis Ramey, age 46 of Marble Hill, Ga., passed Saturday, July 5, 2008 as the result of an auto accident.
Survivors include his wife, Leisa Ramey, Marble Hill; mother, Januita Ramey, Marble Hill; daughters, Ashley Ramey and Angela Blackwell, both of Marble Hill; brothers, Johnny Ramey, Marble Hill, Douglas Ramey, Oxford, Tracy Ramey, Calhoun, and Glenn Ramey, Jasper; sisters, Margie Mathis, Dawson County, and Geraldine Westbrooks, Monticello; and grandchildren, Cierra Shouse, Chandler Blackwell and Haigen Swafford.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, July 8 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Chadwick, Charlie Buchanan and William Blackwell officiating. Interment followed in Four Mile Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chris Brown, Dean Wilkie, John Castleberry, Kenny Chumley, Brandon Mathis, Randy and Tony Westbrooks and Travis Ramey. The family did accept flowers but prefer donations to help with the funeral expenses.
Warren Tilson, age 85 of Jasper, Ga., went home to be with his Lord on Monday, June 30, 2008.
He was a graduate of Hapeville High School, Southwest Photo Arts Institute, Southern Methodist University and Emory University. Mr. Tilson was a veteran of WW II having volunteered on Dec. 8, 1941 and flew combat missions with the US 5th Air Force. He worked in various sales positions in Atlanta, Birmingham and Dallas and as a director of Christian Education in Florida.
He is survived by a host of friends, brothers and sisters-in-law, O.B. and Dianne Deere, Ball Ground, Ga., and Walter and Joanna Deere, Lilburn, Ga.; nephew, Jeffrey Deere, Cartersville, Ga.; and niece, Lauren Burtt, Lawrenceville, Ga.
Following his directive, the body was cremated. In lieu of floral offerings, he suggested donations be directed to Jasper United Methodist Church, 85 West Church St., Jasper, Ga. 30143 or Association for Research and Enlightenment, 215 67th St., Virginia Beach, Va. 23451.
