Marilyn F. Chester, age 90 of Cumming, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. She was born on Dec. 10, 1923.
Marilyn was a life-long Episcopalian who had a deep faith in her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Daughters of the King for over 30 years. She enjoyed reading, sewing and needlework.
Survivors include her children, Thomas J. and Katherine Chester, Utica, N.Y., Jennifer and William Kelley, Bethune, S.C., and Trude C. and Ferrell Brown, Cumming; and grandchildren, Joshua Ricketson, Macon, Elizabeth Ricketson, Roswell, and Evelyn Chester, Silver Spring, Md. Several great-grandchildren and the staff of Sonshine Manor in Jasper, Ga, who have been part of her extended family for the last four years also survive.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of The Holy Family with Dea. Katherine Armentrout officiating. Ingram Funeral Home & Crematory, Cumming, is in charge of arrangements.
Billy Joe Swafford, age 64 of Tate, Ga. passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Embracing Hospice following a period of declining health.
Born August 28, 1949, in Gwinnett County to the late Sherman and Lenny Mae Swafford, he had lived in Pickens County for the past 10 years having moved from Dawsonville. Mr. Swafford worked a number of years in residential construction and formerly owned a filling station in Buford. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Swafford; brother, Ronnie Swafford; and daughter-in-law, Tonya Swafford.
Surviving are his children, Billy Joe, Jr. and Juanell Swafford, Cumming, Bobby Joe Swafford, Tate, Terry Joe and Jeff Swafford, Melinda “Misty” Swafford and Joey Swafford, all of Cumming; sister, Shirley Foster, Dallas; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and his ex-wives, Brenda Swafford, Helen Swafford and Carrol Greene.
The funeral service was held Monday, March 3, at 3 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barney Johns officiating. Interment followed in Dawsonville Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Charles Anthony Byers, age 71 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Canton Nursing Center in Canton, Ga.
Born March 2, 1943, in Cherokee County, he was the son of the later Aubrey Samuel Byers and Marie Fitts Byers and was also preceded in death by a brother, Kevin Byers.
Mr. Byers had been employed as a flight line inspector with Lockheed-Martin in Marietta, Ga., and was a member of the Long Swamp Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Byers, Talking Rock; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Joel McKinney, Ball Ground; sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Kelly Byers, Talking Rock, and Todd and Shea Byers, Jasper; grandchildren, Hannah Byers, Talking Rock, and Emmaline McKinney, Ball Ground; brother, Roy Byers, Jasper; and sister-in-law, Dixie Byers, Jasper. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Long Swamp Baptist Church with the Revs. Lamar Frady, Charles Holbert and Marcus McKinney officiating. Entombment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family received friends until the funeral hour on Wednesday. Arrangements and services are entrusted to the caring staff of Roper Funeral Home & Crematory.
Miss Everleen McCowan, age 80 of Jasper, Ga., died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
Everleen was born on Oct. 15, 1933, in Chambers County, Al., to the late Henry and Hattie McCowan. She was a longtime resident of Grandview Nursing Home. Everleen loved to fish, trips to the lake to feed the ducks, visits to the apple orchard and was loved by so many people.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one sister, Idella Morgan, Decatur; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Tina McCowan, Athens; and sisters-in-law, Helen McCowan, Jasper, Doris McCowan, San Diego, Ca., and Marion McCowan, West Virginia. Several aunts, nieces, nephews and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John L., Booker T., Melvin and Truman McCowan; and sister, Dorene Brightwell.
A graveside service was held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Sunrise Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Scott McClure and Leo Hampton officiating. Roper Funeral Home & Crematory in Jasper in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Glenda M. Hayes, age 71 of Tate, Ga., passed away at her residence on March 2, 2014.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan Hayes, Tate, Joe and Cheryl Hayes, Morganton, Ga., Ken and Louise Hayes, Jasper, and Mike Hayes, Almo, Ga.; and brothers, Ottis Page, Canton, Ga., and James “Pete” Page, Stockbridge, Ga. Nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Waddell, Pete Page and J.T. Padgett officiating. Interment was at Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
