Bentley Elijah Poss, infant son of Stephen Patrick Poss and Kimberly Jean Ashburn, of Ball Ground, Ga., passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Tony and Kathy Poss, Ball Ground, and Perry and Dorothy Ashburn, Talking Rock, Ga.; and great-grandmothers, Edith Lillian Ashburn, Talking Rock, Ga., and Faye Poss, Snellville, Ga. Several other aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, from Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Mr. Chris Stancil officiating.
Thomas J. VanSant, age 70 of Dallas, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2012.
A native of the Atlanta area, Mr. VanSant was the president of Aerosol Specialties Corporation. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in Chemistry, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marietta.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah VanSant; daughter, Morgan VanSant; brother, Bill VanSant, Kennesaw, Ga.; and sister, June Evans, Sandy Springs, Ga.

Barbara Philyaw Callahan, age 78 of Kennesaw, died Wednesday August 1, 2012.
Mrs. Callahan was a native of Jasper, Ga. She married and moved to Nelson, Ga., in 1952 and later moved to Acworth in 1965. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. She was employed with State Farm Insurance Company for 34 years as a Claims Representative. Mrs. Callahan served in the music ministry beside her husband during his years of serving as pastor of many area churches. She was an accomplished musician.
Mrs. Callahan owned and operated Beulah Land Tours. She has guided 37 trips to Israel. Currently, she served as the organist for Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, was the recording secretary for Kenworth Golden K Kiwanis and was a member of the State WMU Board.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles S. Callahan. She is survived by her sons, Timothy A. “Tim” (Melissa) Callahan and Sammy (Wanda) Callahan; grandchildren, Carrie Reeser, Emily Burdine, Matt Callahan and Clinton Callahan; and great-grandchildren, Anna Ryan Reeser and Rebecca Reeser.
A Celebration of Life Service was held Saturday August 4, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Acworth with the Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Interment followed Cool Springs Cemetery in Tate, Ga. Lois Swafford Chumley, age 86 of Marble Hill, passed away Thursday August 2, 2012, at Northside Forsyth Hospital following a short illness.
Born August 13, 1925, in Dawson County to the late Carl and Mae Swafford, she had lived in Pickens County for the past 65 years. A homemaker at her death, Mrs. Chumley was a former nurse’s aide at the Tate Clinic after which she was ward clerk at Pickens General Hospital for 20 years. She was a member of Juno Baptist Church and was also preceded in death by her sister, Cleo Bruce.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Loy Chumley, Marble Hill; children, Glenda Black and Randy and Barbara Chumley, all of Marble Hill, Linda Bearden and Tracy and Rhonda Chumley, all of Dawsonville, Greg Chumley, Marble Hill; sister, Eunice “Boody” Chumbley, Dawsonville; and brothers and sister-in-law, Glenson and Arlene Swafford, Dawsonville, and Max Swafford, Holly Springs. Eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday August 5, at 2 o’clock at the Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Burt officiating. Interment followed in the Juno Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers were accepted or donations may be made to the Juno Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Mrs. Kim Godfrey, age 50 of Talking Rock, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Atlanta Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Godfrey; mother, Sylvia Akins, Marble Hill; son and daughter-in-law; Lane and Kristie Godfrey, Talking Rock; daughters and sons-in-law, Lori Godfrey, Talking Rock, Kelli and Danny Dianellos, Ball Ground, and Amie and Josh Swisher, Jasper; brother, Kenneth Boyd, Woodstock; sister, Sonia Arflin, Marble Hill; and grandchildren, Dalton Dianellos and Damon and Alex Swisher. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 5, from Town Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Chadwick and Leroy Kelley officiating. Interment followed after at the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Kenneth Boyd, Jason and Jeff Puckett, Mike Conner, Roger and Jamie Godfrey, Charlie Gibson and Joseph Davis. The family did accept flowers. Mrs. Virginia Cagle, age 89 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Leon Cagle, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Judy Cagle, Jasper; and daughters and sons-in-law, Barbra and Billy O’Sheilds and Shirley and Troy Morris, all of Jasper. Six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Cagle was preceded in death by her daughter Regenia Wimpey; and granddaughter Abigail Grace Wimpey,
The funeral service was held Monday, August 6, from Refuge Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Grogan officiating. Interment followed after at the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ronny Holcomb, Brian Wimpey, Mark Coleman, Jason Cagle, Richard O’Shields and Stuart Mason. Flowers were accepted but donations may be made to Refuge Baptist Church.

Mrs. Peggy Proctor, age 83 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at her residence.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Folsom C. and Karen Proctor, Jasper; daughter, Marcia Proctor, Atlanta; brother, Richard Stowe, Mint Hill, N.C.; and grandson, Folsom C. Proctor IV.
A private memorial service was held at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 4, at her son’s residence.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Thompson, age 83 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012, at her residence.
Survivors include her sons, Alan Dwight Thompson, Ellijay, Keat Lamar Thompson, Jasper, and Gary Leslie Thompson, New Jersey; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann Andrews and Marion Edwin of Graham, Fl., Nora Jean Joiner and Michael Joseph, Holly Springs, Amy Patricia Turner & Kenneth Joe, Ball Ground; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert Frazier and Lener, Ft. Walton Beach, Fl. Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, August 7, at Jasper Church of God with Pastors J.T. Willoughby and Tommy White officiating. Interment followed after at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. The family did accept flowers. Cagle Funeral Home was honored to serve the family.
