Obituaries for March 29, 2012; Carol Hawk, Clayton Garet, Jr., Estelle Fountain, Ada Martin

Carol Hawk

Mrs. Carol Joyce Hawk, age 73 of Jasper, Ga., and formerly of Albany, Ga., died Monday, March 19, 2012, at the Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper following a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 23, 1938, in Jamestown, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William John and Katherine Harrick Halliday and was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Claude William Hawk who passed away in October of 2011; and a grandson, Brandon Hawk.

Mrs. Hawk was a homemaker and was a charter member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Albany, Ga.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda K. Putnam, Acworth, Ga.; son, William Scott Hawk, Wetumpka, Al.; grandchildren, Amanda Ledford, Jasper, Bryan Hawk, Cedar Bluff, Al., and Craig Wynn, Decatur, Al.; and brothers, Jack Halliday, Monroe, Ga., and Robert Halliday, Athens, Ga.  Nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

The funeral service was held at noon, Thursday, March 22, from Liberty Baptist Church in Albany with the remains placed in state at the church at 11 a.m. The Rev. Charlie Rouse officiated with interment in the Floral Memory Gardens in Albany. Roper Funeral Home and Crematory in charge of the arrangements.

Clayton Garet, Jr.

Mr. Clayton D. Garet, Jr., age 72 of Jasper, Ga., passed away at his residence Thursday, March 22, 2012, following a period of declining health.

Mr. Garet was born on Feb. 1, 1940, in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., to the late Clayton Dunham Garet, Sr. and Lili Christenson Garet. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1962 (GO GATORS!). He was also a member of Tau Chapter of Theta Chi. Clayton began his career with IBM in 1962, taking early retirement in 1992. He served as president of Millard Wayne Corp., then Agylisys Corp., SMR. He retiring and moved to Jasper in 2005.

Mr. Garet married Claudia Turner Stanley, Atlanta, Ga., in 1999. The love of my life, a true gentleman and my best friend. Stepson, H. Gregory Hunter; step-grandchildren Ethan, Macie and Leanne Hunter, Jasper. Married Elaine LeMieux in 1961, Fort Lauderdale, Fl.  Daughters, Laurie Steward, Grayson, Ga., Christine Cross, Roswell, Ga., and Mary Micklow, Charlotte, N.C.; son, Michael Garet, Fleetwood, N.C.;  sons-in-law: Darryl Steward, Chuck Cross and Andy Micklow; daughter-in-law, Brooke Crossley; grandchildren, Alexandra Steward, Orlando, Fl., Austin Steward, Grayson, Ga., Kelsey and Colton Cross, Roswell, Ga., and Alexander and Lauren Micklow, Charlotte, N.C.;  sister, Dorothy Blanton; nieces, Peggy Blanton and Penny Vereen; and nephew-in- law, Justin Vereen, Pawleys Island, S.C.

At his request, Mr. Garet was cremated with a memorial service at a later date, by invitation. Roper Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Estelle Fountain

Mrs. Estelle Fountain, age 90 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012, at her residence.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James T. and Darline Fountain, Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ralph Poole, Jasper; brother, Arthur Atkins, Jasper; grandchildren, Lisa Watkins, Casey Poole, Scott Fountain and Carla Poole; great-grandchildren, Justin Watkins, Jenna Watkins Eubanks, Kaitlyn Poole, Ayden and Jackson Fountain and Carson Veal; and great-great-grandchildren, Gracie Watkins, Elijah Eubanks and Sophia Watkins.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Childers officiating. Interment followed in Free Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Scott Fountain, Casey Poole, Jerry and Justin Watkins, Mike Parker and John Atkins.

Ada Martin

Ada Jane Allred Martin, age 83 of Marietta, died Sunday, March 25, 2012.

Mrs. Martin was a native of Pickens County, Ga., and moved to Cobb County in 1947. She was a member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church in Waleska, Ga. She retired from the McLaren Corporation after 25 years of service.

Mrs. Martin was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009. Also from the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, she was awarded the Fan Award in 2009 and was a 2012 nominee for The Anita Sorrells Mathis award.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her sister, Mae Bennett, Canton; special friend, Vernon Patterson, Woodstock; and numerous nieces and nephews and numerous children that thought of her as a grandmother.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 28, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Marietta Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Tatum officiating. Interment followed at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
